I don’t know. I support the “no sticker gang” movement, but in this case, since they have their own box and lead case, I think it’s better to keep the stickers.

That’s correct. It’s a dip pen/nib holder. One would insert a steel nib into it for dipping into ink to write with, like a fountain pen without a reservoir.

I suggest using “accordion” for those with a rounded tip and “bellows” fot the flat-tipped ones. Or vice-versa, as you prefer.

Although it’s arguable if SMASH was the first to have this style of button, I think it is the most popular and well documented example, with lots of design-related (in Japanese) articles online. I used ‘accordion sleeve’ in my own notes but it seems Pentel officially used ‘bellows’ in some of their published articles. Here are some I bookmarked:

The knock button is just as unique as the rubber ribs. The knock button on the Smash is covered with a bellows that looks just like a pump. The design intent was to create a sense of unity with the entire body. To bring out the toughness of the concept, the design was inspired by the shock absorbers found on motorcycles. It’s very entertaining to watch the bellows compress when you press the knock button.

According to the German publication “Die neuen Schreibstifte in der DDR 1977 bis 1988” (The new writing pens in the GDR from 1977 to 1988, published by Richard Anger in 2020) the corrugated rubber collar at the movable part belonged to a pen design created in 1979 by a collective of four designers, together with a wire clip (the one on the LAMY safari, which came onto the market the following year, was very similar).

So good! The two on the left are hard to come by (especially in working condition, as they often have slippery clutches).
