We did praise Andor. it was 100% mentioned here somwhere. And again yes its a great show.
I might’ve missed it… it was a quick scan of the thread. Glad you liked it. Can’t wait for season 2 next year!
I saw the first episode of Yellowstone and it looked OK. Haven’t circled back yet. Does it get increasingly more intense and captivating as episodes roll on?
I didn’t quite know what to think of Outer Range, which has a curious blend of rural ranch life and time travel. I thought the 2nd season was a reasonably good progression from the 1st season, but then… BANG–series cancelled. A number of mysteries left unexplained or unfinished. Maddening.
I really liked Andor. On of the best of this new Star Wars serialized chapter. A very interest perspective in the Star Wars universe. I always wondered about the scrappy independent techs that keep so much machinery and equipment going.
Fallout is so bizarre! And so cool. I’ve enjoyed the futurized retro aesthetic. It’s going to be really interesting to see how things unfold in the next season.
Last week the we started watching Tulsa King on Paramount.
The series stars Sylvester Stallone as Dwight Manfredi, an American Mafia caporegime who has been recently released from prison in New York and is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he begins to set up a criminal organization.
I’m not a fan of most crime drama shows, but this one is not half bad.
I cannot stand the latest personality incarnation of Stallone (he has really tarnished his legacy)… but Tulsa King looks interesting. I’ll have to check it out.
Agreed. I had to figure out a way to get past it. Sometimes it’s hard to separate the actor from the character, but if I blacklisted every celebrity or media personality that I didn’t agree with, I’d probably watch a lot less TV and movies. Maybe that isn’t a bad thing?
Yellowstone isn’t bad, but it starts to decline as time goes on, sort of a “it’s beginning to drag” thing? On the other hand, 1883 (Yellowstone’s prequel) has better execution and writing and since it only has one season it can’t drag on for too long so the story flows in a better way.
Right now, though, the series that has my full attention is The Penguin. I thought I was completely burnt out on the superhero genre, but thankfully the series is much more like a mob drama than anything else. And not just any mob drama, it’s a reallyyyy good one. If you’re into that kind of thing, it’s definitely worth a watch.
Anyone watching Landman? Season 1 is really good!
I saw White Lotus seasons 1 & 2, and thought the 2nd was better than the first. There’s so much going on in each episode, it bears rewatching. Excellent directing and cinematography.
The 3rd season is presently in release, 1 episode a week. I’m not that crazy about it. It’s very dark right off the bat. It’s hard to relate to any of the main characters. Jason Isaacs is in this season and I like him as an actor. Not a great role for him, but he’s doing alright. Not a fan of Parker Posey.
The Agency
Starring Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere…
Amazing in all respects. Highly recommended.
Trailer
If you’re into crime mob action packed productions, you’ll enjoy this. The first episode is a bit hard to take, as it’s brutal and bloody. I bailed on it for a few weeks, then came back to it based on encouragement from a friend. It gets better.
First off, Pierce Brosnan has a solid role in it and he’s extremely good. Probably his best role yet. I wasn’t all that keen on him as James Bond… although I thought he did a better job than Roger Moore. Then there was The Thomas Crown Affair, which was one of his better movies. I’d all but forgotten about him. He shines in this. Fantastic personification of Conrad Harrigan.
Next is Helen Mirren. Now, she’s a gem. So many phenomenal roles over the years. The most lauded acting pedigree of anyone in this production. She’s brutally good. As Maeve Conrad, her chemistry with Pierce Brosnan is fantastic. She’s subtle but cunning and plotting.
But the real gem here is Tom Hardy. I didn’t really care for his role in Star Trek Nemesis. I mean, he did a good job, but it was poorly written. He made much better acting inroads in the years ahead with “Tinker Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” “Mad Max Fury Road,” “The Revenant,” “Inception,” and “Dunkirk.” Here, he’s a mob boss’s lead henchman. You don’t really see him shine until a few episodes in… and then, wow. He plays this character phenomenally. He has some excellent lines, too. He’s the lead. Most of the focus is on him and his job. How he handles things. The Harrigans would be lost without him.
There’s only 1 season thus far. 10 episodes. But they’re intense and you’ll find yourself rewatching episodes to catch everything. There’s a big story arc closure at the end, but also the opening for an entirely new arc to start. There’s no word on a Season 2 yet, but given MobLand premiere broke Paramount+'s record for its largest global series launch ever, with 2.2 million viewers on 30 March, there’s a good chance we’ll see another season.
Alien Earth on Hulu is a fantastic sci-fi show that’s got me hooked after just two episodes. The writing’s awesome, the acting’s on point, and the special effects are so good it feels like watching a movie. It mixes creepy sci-fi horror with some real human drama. No spoilers, but it’s about a spacecraft crashing on Earth (full of alien specimens). If the first episodes are anything to go by, this show’s gonna be a wild ride and a total must-see for Alien fans or anyone into sci-fi.
Here is the timeline and how it fits into the Alien universe
Sounds promising!
I need to renew my Hulu membership. I signed up just for “Only Murders In The Building” then let it lapse until the next season streams.
Did you see Alien Covenant? Just watched it recently. What a disappointment. I absolutely cannot stand the ecosystem ignorance on display. Alien worlds don’t have just visibly dangerous creatures. There’s microbes, bacteria, and viruses to be encountered! Idiots. “Oh, look at that mushroom like spore sphere. How about I just sniff it?” ![]()
I did - and t was OK but could have been a little better for sure.
Which movie is your favorite from the Alien (or Predator) franchise?
I’ve always thought the first of each were the best. However I really liked Prey.
You?
The first Alien movie was tremendous. It was so ground breaking. I saw it in theaters a few months after it first came out. I was really freaked out and riveted throughout the entire movie. The whole introduction of the alien creature’s insanely bizarre and horrific lifecycle was unlike anything ever made up to then. The imaginations of the creators blew me away. One thing that was so strangely mysterious was the spaceship. It seemed almost organic… and yet, then there was the organic manifestations of the alien… and it was difficult to figure out which one ended and the other began. There was so much mystery. Just what did this asymmetrical alien ship look like? Why did it look like that? We also got pretty much nothing about the aliens who were later revealed as “Engineers.” The spacesuits made them look almost dinosaur like. Again… where did the being end and the spacesuit begin? It was kind of maddening that we were left with so little to go on. We had to wait 7 whole years for another Alien movie (“Aliens”)… which I also enjoyed. It was a different kind of movie. I was kind of disappointed how the only thing that carried forward from the first movie was the alien. Nothing about the alien spaceship or the species that created it. Then another 6 years to get Alien 3… which again… was just the alien creature in a whole new environment. I really didn’t enjoy it much. Alien Resurrection was also lousy… which tried to revive feelings of “Aliens”, but failed. Alien vs. Predator was terrific. I thought it was so very cool how they made the crossover, using that subtle cue give in Predator 2 (1990) with the alien xenomorph skeleton in the ship… which gave that whole new sub franchise life. But… the other movies were lacking.
I thought “Prey” was a refreshing take on the Predator premise… although hunting such primitive indigenous peoples with high tech seems… unfulfilling. Where’s the challenge? At least on 1990’s Earth, there were humans with projectile weapons that could actually kill a predator alien.
well said!
Did you enjoy Prometheus? And how was the recent Romulus? Although heavily criticized by Alien franchise fans, Prometheus remains one of my favorite modern movies in the series due to the insane concept art and some intense scenes in the second half of the movie. Nothing beats 1st and 2nd though.
Also anyone here into the Horror genre?
I recently watched Weapons on the big screen, pretty entertaining and definitely going to keep me awake a few nights ![]()
