I do like that older Leadlok. I only have one that old, but I do have a bunch with the plastic grip.
Speaking of lead pointers: A recent find.
This crank lead pointer was made from 1954 to 1982 and was available in three versions (Dahle 99, 1954–1967; dahle 99, 1967–1975; DAHLE 99, 1975–1982). This is the second version, and I was lucky enough to get an unused one with box and instructions.
My first Precision Point I inherited from my dad when he passed in the early 90’s.
I have never seen that creme color one.
This piece is a little gem! It is not a planetary double-burr crank like the Citomin, but for me, it is the next best thing.
The metal grip can sometimes scratch a leadholder body, but the tips this one can produce… amazing!
For sure - this is lead pointer (leadholder)? Not pencil sharpener?
Either way, nice stuff ![]()
Just a lead pointer, yes. It looks a lot like a rotary crank pencil sharpener, and operates on the same basis, but it is indeed just a lead pointer — the milling wheel inside the structure is way shorter, so that it only sharpens the extended lead (whose final length is set by letting the end of the lead core fall into one of the two pits on top of the dome).
I think it can also disassembled and reassembled in such a way that it can be secured to a wall with a screw, like it happens for some American pencil sharpeners, and also for the Citomin desk mount lead pointer.
I had a new blue one once, but now I am using it ![]()
This creme-colored one is very rare. I saw it sell only twice on eBay: once for $200 (which I couldn’t afford), and another time for around $60 or a little more, if I recall correctly (the one I ended up buying).
Did your dad collect any writing instruments?
Here are my packaged Precision Points, along with my replacement blades for them.
I am still looking for a packaged Blue, and now the Crème one.
No. He was a Systems Analyst. I didn’t know about these until he passed.
I always wondered if Dahle also made the model 5400 lead pointer for Staedtler:
How does it compare with the first version of the Dahle? I don’t believe I have ever seen one (although they are very easily overlooked due to their obvious similarities with ordinary desktop pencil sharpeners).
Sorry he passed away. I doubt he used too many pencils in his work. My dad passed away about 18 years ago. He used to do calligraphy as a hobby, and he was a big fan of Sheaffer fountain pens and the Koh-I-Noor graphite pencils.
I have never heard of the Citomin. It must be an amazing device! Do you have one?
I haven’t used the Dahle yet, but maybe there is a way to protect the barrel of the lead holder.
The design of the A.W. Faber version is particularly great!
But I didn’t regret selling these 4 in 2017 for $250
