What is the grip made of? It looks like it is layers stacked.

Stacked leather. Like a traditional mallet handle.
Then filed into a pentagonal grip.

I was wondering if that was the case. I have a pen that has a grip that is similar and made from layered leather that is turned on a lathe. I love the unique use of materials like this.

I bought this mint H-583 to have a replacement tip for my H-2083, only to realize their tips aren’t interchangeable and I shouldn’t have made the assumption that they are

That’s a very logical assumption and I’d have likely made the same mistake. On the outside, the nose cones look identical. But yeah… the difference… is the screw threads. One is longer.
If the mechanisms are identical otherwise, what about just swapping them too? But then, maybe the eraser cap might not fit. PILOT was sadly inconsistent in some regards like this.
Could potentially be solved with a spacer between the threads and the thicker stopper of the mechanism.

So the diameter of the screw threads on the H-583 are actually wider, enough that the mechanism can’t make it through the opening on the H-2083?
That Kaweco is adorable. And I’ve never seen that 703 Marquise before, is it aluminum? 2mm?

Yes. The H-2083 internals have 3.8mm diameter on the threads and 3.1mm diameter on the clutch housing, while the H-583 internals are at 4.3mm on the threads and 3.3mm on the clutch ring[1]. The threads are also at different lengths and distances from the end. They both have a hexagonal part behind the threads to fix the internals in place when inserted into the body, but the 2083’s hex is at 4.0mm diameter while the 583’s hex is at 4.5mm, so swapping the internals won’t work either (583 internals can’t even get into 2083 body)
I guess it’s time for an H-1083 purchase 
(I have been looking for one anyway, waiting for a nice one to pop up)
H-2083 has the higher end fixed clutch housing, knocking on the internals alone already opens the clutch, like an S20. H-583 has the separate clutch ring that needs to be stopped by the inside of the nosecone to have the clutch open, like an S3/5/10. ↩︎
