We need a “real“ green 600

Love salmon. Had sashimi last night that included salmon, yellow tail, tuna, mackerel… spicy tuna avocado roll. So good! Cooked salmon is one of my favorites. How do you prepare it?

Since it doesn’t happen to all of them… we can’t really say the specs in the mill were wrong, unless it was per batch. I’d go with crappy brass stock…

We have a blackstone griddle - I use it more than my grill

This looks like a LOT of fun.

When we do camping trips with our kids’ scouts group, one dad cooks just about everything on a griddle. So amazing.

Here in Taiwan, grandmas are the queens of the open air griddle - whipping out delicious breakfast for their neighborhood at an amazing pace.

That’s the one we have! I love it. Use it all the time.

I bet that is amazing.

I’d never before heard of an outdoor gas powered griddle. Fascinating! A typical grill does have a lot of limitations. You certainly can’t do any small loose vegetables or meats on it. When I cook salmon on the grill, if it’s small pieces I’ll lay down aluminum foil and just poach the fish on it. The griddle idea looks amazing. Apparently Blackstone makes an assortment of versions, from table top, to 2 burner, to 4 burner. How hard is it to clean them?

they come in sizes from around 12" tabletop to 36" and larger. It’s really easy to clean. We have the 28" and I bought the lid (which also helps keep it clean/out of the weather).

Today was the day of the nightmare, I finally decided to take my Rotring 600 rose out of storage to use, and it is cracked!!! I never used the pencil, I bought it and stored it, it’s surreal that the quality has dropped so much.

can you post a picture of it?
sorry to hear about your pencil.

:frowning:
I’ve been forcing myself to look away from the newer color variants, like the mint and dark blue (w/o Nonble branding)… rOtring can’t be oblivious to this kind of reputation killer?

I was wondering, since rOtring has basically not addressed this quality issue, what does Loft, Itoya and Nonble say about having defective items bearing their logo? Maybe they could help drive this? Probably a lost cause at this point, but I really hate to see this brand become so diminished. But - I’ve been looking into the whole 600 line (MP, BP, FP, RB, multipen, etc.) and the cracking has been going on for a while, especially in the early pens.
I’m not a machinist, or even close to one, so I’m not going to speculate on the cause, but from a consumer and collector POV its kind of like walking through a landmine.

I’d love to start collecting some datapoints to see if there are any trends in these failures.

Oh man… so is that Rose or Rose Gold? Was that bought from Amazon?

Before I discovered the cracks, I’d bought two rOtring 600’s, one in mint green (w/o Nonble) and one in chocolate truffle. One on YAJ and one on Mercari–coming in my next shipment. Really hoping they’re crack-free. So far the only ones I’ve gotten with cracks came from Japan. The ones I’ve gotten in the USA (Amazon) have all been fine. If these additional ones have cracks, I’m not buying any more of them.

My camera is not the best, but I’ve managed to capture the crack

Mine was bougth from Japan. I’m on the fence about whether or not to buy another one to replace it, I wanted to buy the ice blue but I’m afraid the same problem will happen.

Yep… that’s the typical place, at one of the hexagonal edges or “points”. Usually it’s just one and can be a hairline crack or with a notable gap.

Btw, there are lens covers you can get for the small cellphone lenses that’ll help magnify. That’s what I did. Mine isn’t made for it. It’s an old glass lens that I extracted from a junk film camera (plastic body). I did that for a free “loupe.” It has been handy for examining stuff up close… then I discovered I can actually use it as a magnifying extender for my cellphone. It’s a little cumbersome to hold in place (I wedge it between two fingers) but it works well enough for the job.

Didn’t rotring announce a change in alloy composition a few years ago? I remember a reddit post about it with people weighting the pens before and after.

To be fair, TWSBI has had the same problem for ages with their pens cracking (both the FPs and the precision MPs) and people will still buy them because they look cool, don’t cost too much and have pretty colors. Rotring now is a very different brand than 30 years ago, I believe.

Wow, I didn’t know that. Is that cracks seen on arrival or do they progressively appear?

They progressively appear. If you search for “twsbi cracking” in google you’ll get a lot of hits from r/fountainpens, youtube and fountainpennnetwork.

Yikes. I don’t have a TWSBI pencil or pen… and had flirted with the idea of picking up one eventually. Probably not going to now. Thanks for the clarification!

Then I’m obviously lucky, because my TWSBI Precision 0.5 in black, bought about 15 years ago, has no cracks (at least I haven’t found any with a magnifying glass). But maybe it’s also because I’ve rarely used the pencil …
