STAEDTLER ID guide 1969-2022

Compiled by me with invaluable contributions from many others.

This definitive post contains all mechanical pencils manufactured by STAEDTLER, be it STAEDTLER.de (Germany), STAEDTLER.jp (Japan) (some models within the .jp section are actually manufactured in places like Thailand, so consider it a general Asian market section) or STAEDTLER.us (United States). Limited editions models won’t be mentioned, similarly, most different generation models won’t be mentioned (except retro’s 3 gens, marsmicro’s 6 gens, and 925 4 gens - or the uncommon 771 and 772 Micrograph early versions).

The first section has information on models manufactured by STAEDTLER’s German branch, the second section contains models manufactured by their Japanese branch (actually it’s a general Asian market section) and the third section contains models manufactured by their American branch.

Each section contains the name of the mechanical pencil accompanied by it’s model number (if the information is available); known lead diameter sizes available for the pencil; known colours; features (if any); supposed or definitive years of production; manufacturing country; distributing country; known dimensions (if the information is available); known weight (if the information is available) and a short description about the pencil. Tried to order pencils chronologically (by decade) and divide inside the “decades” by model number.

I’d like to thank every member of the forum (specially @Knockologist for inviting me and @nimrodd for compiling his Pentel ID book that inspired me to make this), every member of the reddit r/mechanicalpencils, @drifand for giving me permission to use his wonderful photographs, u/huntereldredgaming for information (and pictures) on the 925 line and STAEDTLER.de amazing customer service for answering my questions and scanning catalogues for me.

I make no claim to pictures used here, they were taken from websites and/or catalogues and/or taken by friends. If you see your image in here, and would like me to remove them, please contact me (duoforq@gmail.com).

Feel free to ask any question, if there’s any information you’d like to add, contact me and I will be editing the post if the information is important or, feel free to edit the post if you have the permission to do so. Feel free to add measurements and weights that are missing.

STAEDTLER.de

Models listed below had the start of their production from 1969-1980. Every information (including production years) that is “speculative”/“supposed” will be denoted by (s) after it, definitive information when clumped together with (s) will have a (d). All models of this section were manufactured by their German division albeit some of the production of certain models was outsourced to Japanese companies.

MARS-MICROGRAPH 0X 770 0X

(Source: penessay)

  • Size: 0.5/0.7/0.9
  • Base colour: medium blue
  • 1969(d)-1977(s)
  • Manufacturing country: Germany
  • Distributing country: International
  • Dimensions: Length: ~150mm(s)

This is STAEDTLER’s first “fineline” pencil (mechanical pencil) and their only mechanical pencil from the 60’s.

Micrograph F [Fixed (sleeve)] 770 1X/1X N - OLD & NEW

(Source: Ebay)

  • Size: 0.3/0.5/0.7/0.9
  • Base colours: medium blue - changed later to lighter blue for 0.3; mars blue for 0.5; medium blue for 0.7; darker blue for 0.9
  • Features: knurled grip; lead grade indicator
  • 1977(d)-1990(d)
  • Manufacturing country: Germany
  • Distributing country: International
  • Dimensions and weight: Width: 8.6mm / Length: 140.5mm / Weight: 12.9 g

(Source: Worthpoint) - “new” version
Differences: colour variations; tip is no longer straight.

(Source: Penessay) - N (“shorter”) version
Differences: supposedly the length is shorter by 2mm; the N marking is in the box only.

These were the first flagship STAEDTLER Mars drafting oriented mechanical pencil, featuring a knurled grip and lead grade indicator.

Micrograph HS [Half-slide (sleeve)] 7710X/1X - OLD & NEW

(Source: penessay) - OLD 0X version
image
(Source: penessay) - supposed OLD 1X version, similar to the Microfix SL 772 15.
Both discontinued before 1978, supposedly offered only in 0.5.

(Source: MMM by Xinzheng Wang) - NEW 0X version - apparently two different variants

(Source: Gunther’s virtual pencil case) - NEW 1X version

  • Size: 0.3/0.5/0.7
  • Base colours: medium blue (1X) - changed later to lighter blue for 0.3; mars blue for 0.5; medium blue for 0.7; darker blue for 0.9 (1X). From 1980-1987/88, all HS models were darker blue (just like the 0X version)
  • Features: knurled grip; lead grade indicator; halfslide feature (40% of the lead pipe retacts)
  • 1977(d)-1990(d) (new 0X and 1X)
  • Manufacturing country: Germany
  • Distributing country: International
  • Dimensions and weight: Width: 8mm / Length: 145mm / Weight: 11.3 g

The 0X was discontinued before 1985, it was only offered in darker blue, must have been discontinued before the new Micro 775 that featured a similar knurled grip (the older one didn’t have a knurl). Some auctions show 0.5 and 0.3 using darker blue, must have been a later version.

Micrograph S [slide (sleeve)] 772 0X/1X

image image
(Source: eBay) - 1X
image
(Source: penessay) - 0X

  • Size: 0.3(d)/0.5(d)/0.7(s)/0.9(s)

  • Features: retractable lead sleeve
  • 1976(s)-pre-1978(d)
  • Manufacturing country: Germany
  • Distributing country: International

Discontinued before 1978, there’s no mention of a Micrograph S in the 1978 catalogue and in the catalogues from the 1980’s the closest thing are the Microfix SL. Sellers claim these are from late 1970s.

  • Dimensions and weight: Width: 8.6mm / Length: 139mm / Weight: 9g

STAEDTLER’s most famous vintage cheap mechanical pencil, intended to be a P20X competitor.

Models listed after this had their production start from 1980-1988, they are not necessarily ordered chronologically.

Microfix SL 772 05/15/25

(Source: 87-88 catalogue, there is no difference with the earlier models)

  • Distributing country: Germany

Condor 05 776 / Airliner 05 776 25 / Polo 776 PS / Polo GT 776 15

(Source: STAEDTLER catalogue scans)

(Source: STAEDTLER 87-88 catalogue)

  • Size: 0.5 (all)
  • Base colour: blue, orange, red, green, black, etc (776 and 776 PS and 776 GT) / metallised plastic ( 25)
  • Features: grooved grip - condor and airliner had a slight different grip but they were still grooved
  • 1983(d)-1984(d) - for Condor / 1983(d)-1985(d) Airliner / 1983(d)-2000(d) - for Polo / 1987(d)-2000(d) - for polo GT
  • Manufacturing country: Germany
  • Distributing country: International

Internals are interchangeable, earlier polo didn’t have a metal lead sleeve (unlike condor and airliner), this changed before the 1987-88 catalogue. @2nd_astronaut believes the condor and airliner were promotional models - he seems correct, production of the condor lasted <1 year while the airliner lasted <2 years.

Micromatic 777 15/25/75

(Source: STAEDTLER 87-88 catalogue)

  • Size: 0.5
  • Base colour: black plastic barrel woth silver metal grip (15) / silver barrel and grip (25) / 24k gold barrel and grip (75)
  • Features: etched grip; full automatic mechanism; cushioned tip
  • 1985(s)-1988(d)
  • Manufacturing country: Germany
  • Distributing country: International
  • Dimensions: Width: 8mm / Length: 140mm

STAEDTLER’s ultimate writing utensil, due to the mechanism’s complexity, most models don’t work properly. Patents filed for the USPT seem to indicate the model was intended to be used at a vertical writing angle - could be why so many don’t work anymore albeit owners also complain about the cushioned tip.

@2nd_astronaut speculates that there was a 05 variant because he has found 777 15’s with some grip variation.

Retro 778 / Retro de luxe 778 25

(Source: Drifand’s pinterest account)

  • 1984-1996 - first generation 778 / 2000(d)-2004(s) - 2nd generation 778 / 2010(s)-?? - 3rd generation 778 / 1985(s)-1988(d) - Retro de luxe

  • Distributing country: International / apparently sold only in a few markets (3rd gen), notably, the Spanish one
  • Dimensions and weight: Width: 8.5mm / Length: 137.3~139.6mm / Weight: 10.8g (1st generation)

STAEDTLER’s first double knock pencil, collectors claim that the 1st generation is much better than 2nd and 3rd gen.

Cassette 779 05/15

(Source: catalog scans)

  • 1985(s)-1988(d)
  • Manufacturing country: Germany/Japan - some were apparently outsourced to Gotobuki
  • Distributing country: International

  • Base colour: red, blue, black

  • Manufacturing country: Germany/Japan - some were apparently outsourced to Gotobuki
  • Distributing country: International
  • Dimensions and weight: Width: X / Length: 137mm / Weight: X

Some models have faulty mechanisms and the mechanism is also quite complex so it’s unlikely for someone to repair it.

Marstechno 770 0X

STAEDTLER’s penultimate entry to the legendary 770 line, one of their most common mechanical pencils (albeit it’s still hard to find ones in NOS state). Production ended before 2000.

Marsmicro 770 0X

(Source: penessay)

It’s knurling inspired the one found on modern day 925 25/35. A version with a round end cap exists, that’s the only difference and it’s most likely a later version. Production started after the production of Marstechno ended.

First generation consists of old lettering with conjoined ST and DT. (HEG)
Japanese - has a chrome lead indicator ring and the number 500 after its lettering as that was its price, clutch screwed in and no O-ring. (HEG)
USDM (Universal) - has color graded lead indicator rings: Gold = .3mm/Brown = .5mm/Blue = .7mm/Orange = .9mm. Also says “Japan” after its lettering where the JDM 500 would be, clutch screwed in and has an O-ring to secure it. (HEG)
The key difference in the second generation is the new logo and the new lettering, the ST and DT were no longer conjoined. The clutch was mounted differently as well, instead of screwing in like the 1st generation, instead, it drops in and is held in with an O-ring like the 925 25/35. (HEG)
The third generation has a rubber grip.

First generation was a thicker 925 0X with old lettering and logo and in silver, features the number “1000” after the lettering. (HEG)
Second generation has the new logo, still used the old lettering and had the number “1000” after its lettering like the 89-2000 and the ST and DT were no longer joined. (HEG)
Third generation is much like the 2000-2004 except the whole lettering got updated to what it is today. (HEG)

!!!NOTE!!!
Some very rare models have a retractable tip, these were a very very limited production run, to the point where even STAEDTLER doesn’t have spare parts of this run.

925 35 0X - First generation/Second generation/Third generation/Fourth generation

Second geenration: new logo, still used the old lettering and had the number “1000” after its lettering like the 89-2000 and the ST and DT were no longer joined. (HEG)
Third generation: much like the 2000-2004 except the whole lettering got updated to what it is today, not chrome but matte accents like in 89-2004. (HEG)
Fourth generation: much like the 2005-2008 except it was the 20th anniversary and the color changed to a midnight blue, the first time the color of the 35 was changed, and the lettering is chrome along with the tip, clip, and lead indicator ring. (HEG)

!!!NOTE!!!
There was never a midnight blue 89-2008 STAEDTLER 925-35, odds are if its this color is that it was used or the color faded a little. (HEG)

Limited editions and the all black variant aren’t included but may be added in the future.

It was supposed to be bigger, I was gonna add all leadholders from 1924-2018 but it was lagging way too much to add anything else. I will make another post later for the leadholders.

Superb post!

2 color remarks
– I have a black hi-matic
– since some time there is a red microfix sl 772 15 at ebay, but I am not sure if it’s customized (and it is much too expensive)

Feel free to add the information, I consider the black Hi-Matic a LE so I choose to not include it. Didn’t know of the red Microfix, that’s a first, in every catalogue the Microfix appears, it’s colours are: “dark blue” (and then how much of it is metal)

Fantastic work, stu-dying. I don’t know if it’s possible, but I wonder if Staedtler might be able to provide original prices.
The 7701x and 7711x series is probably my favorite. Really solid pencils.

Thanks! Penessay has the original Japanese (sometimes Korean) prices of many but not all models. I might e-mail them tomorrow about it.

This is amazing! Thank you!

One minor correction: The 925 95 was also available in 0.9.

I am not sure if outside of JP the price concept was as strict … On my German pencils with price tags (rotring, fc) I see different prices for same models. So I think original prices were adapted from year to year?

I have no idea if the black hi-matic was limited …
This is the red Microfix Staedtler Mechanical Pencil Microfix rot ohne Bezeichnung Vintage rare | eBay . Since I also only know dark blue version, I am a bit suspicious about this specimen.

BIG UPDATE! Just this morning, I received an e-mail from STAEDTLER containing EVEN MORE catalogue scans (including Japanese ones). I love this company. Its a grand total of 44 scans, some I already had but mostly new stuff that I havent seen in other places. I will update this post and fix any mistakes and make a follow up topic with all scans and a link to download them.

Really nice to see my pics on this amazing post about my favorite pencil (925 95).

Also, there is a nice post about people cataloguing about all the 925 30/35 versions on Reddit.

What an incredible contribution! Thank you for taking the time to write up Staedtler’s interesting history :pray:t6:

The clip imprint suggests this red Microfix was manufactured after 1989. Considering that, one has to think there’s an early 90s catalog with a mention of the red specimen…

I dont think thats it, the Microfix line is not present in 89/90 catalogue. Its last appearence is in the 84 catalogue. I will be posting them tonight (GMT -3) after updating the ID with missing pencils and new information.

Hopefully the last edit! Added the profilm 774 and some other recent pieces, corrected A LOT of dates and now they are mostly definitive.
