Helpful, thanks. Got a matte 171, can’t wait.
Apart from the 241 is the 231 worth it? And wasn’t there a second pencil / variation to the 231?
I’m writing a review for 241, came here looking for the years for MSD-300 and MSD-1000. From what I gathered MSD-500 should be from 2001, and MSD-1500 from 2013.
Finally got a 171 in matte black… Beautiful design, just the right weight, size and girth (almost ⌀ 1mm as I think it should be for a pro tool), imho it’s nearly perfect but… makes a few annoying little noises.
Funny thing though if you remove the pushbutton it becomes silent and more compact in feel. This obviously means that it needs a bit of tape somewhere inside No big deal perhaps, but it is irritating that it needs to be tampered with
4.5 for rattling noises/lack of silencer/grip section doesn’t sit tight in a position
Also, I feel no cushion at all when switch is on…
Then it must be the opposite direction? The markings are confusing as heck.
Unless I’m doing something wrong, It’s the same in both positions. Nothing changes.
Okay, strangely now it’s working after I took it apart and put it back together. It’s actually the lead that sponges around not any of the parts.
As you mentioned @drifand the indicator is not very intuitive.
You have rotate the grip left <---- to achieve the marking on the right off | ON like the barrel is facing you. More intuitively you’d rotate the grip to the right to get the position at the right of the marking, but then you’re actually turning it OFF.
In any case it seemed stuck before I removed and put the grip back bc it wasn’t working in either position and now it’s okay.
Looking forward to check the 241 sliding thing, hopefully out of the box… But maybe I’ll wait for a LE since I’m a bit tired of black and silver combos.
PU241. Meh. Redundant, makes noises, and that cheap plastic body with glitter and weird striations is unacceptable imo.
★★☆☆☆
Never got around to buying one but I guess I will skip.
So the Pro Use 171 is much superior to the 241 from your perspective?
Absolutely. It’s more refined in every aspect, imho.
Edit: the knurling, for example. You want to grab the pencil not that the pencil grabs you. You could skin a wild animal with the grip section of the 241.
I have the same problem that it is on when i trun it left and off when i turn it right which is opposite of the marker and also it becomes Loose after i disassembly and put it back. And i don’t know how to fully disassembly it,the tube inside seems impossible to take out,do you have any idea? Or I just brake it?
The model numbers of Platinum’s recent Pro-use series are based on the last two digits of the release year plus the order of release.
So the model released in 2023 is 231, and the one from 2024 is 241.
If a new model comes out in 2026, it would probably be 261.
I think this way of numbering is great because it makes it easy to tell when each model was released.
Hi welcome!
I don’t remember what I did exactly but I simply disassembled it as far as I could and put it back together. The markings work relatively to the body (not the grip) so if you want the cushioned lead you need to twist the body to the right (or the grip to the left) of the markings when the pencil is facing you
twist body <
is fixed
twist body >
is cushioned
I ran into someone on the Reddit sub for mechanical pencils and they’d stated that the Pro Use 241 was the best Pro Use model Platinum has made to date. I then mentioned about how I’ve read some reviews were people prefer the 171 and they refused to entertain the idea. Crazy how confirmation bias can work.
Should I have mentioned I tested what seems to be a LE model? The all black one with metal body. Not sure if mine is a LE actually, it’s just that I’ve seen other models in photos. There is normal model, a black one and a 'bronce" one. Maybe the standard model is as crappy as the 241 idk
My 241 has a cheap plastic body, and to make it worse it his half grey and it glitters, as if Ziggy Stardust just wiped his face on it. All the functions, besides unscrewing the tip back and forth, seem stuck. Idk maybe it needs re-assembling like the 171 did, but I’d still think the 171 is.more refined
It’s not limited, but it doesn’t seem as widely available as the other color ways and is priced a little more. I have this one and didn’t need to do any adjustments out of the box. The manual pipe adjustment knob is a little squeaky, but nothing a little graphite can’t fix.
