is this wood?
Itâs gold plated/coloured metal (aluminium I think), but it has a striated texture a bit like wood, similar to Staedtlerâs microfix fineliner.
The only rotring pencil I can think of that contains wood is the Primus school pencil, which is like some kind of Kindergarten Core.
And the Tikky wooden
WellâŠit aparently contains woodâŠbut not wooden.
Which LS came first? The clear lead tube with pipe sleeve or the gray lead tube with writing/cone tip?
One with grey tube is the lastâŠaprox 1992
âŠactually just before it became 400 and continuing on.
Sneek preview of this amazing tikkies I found.
I think easily prototypes. No rotring on clipâŠwhich is quite rare itself.
Fantastic addition to your collection!!!

Can I⊠have a lick? ![]()
Unfortunatly, there is also green which I missed.
With yellow one that Anaz foundâŠthese are only tikky I that had transparent bodies. ![]()
Those are amazing!!
Fellow rOtring fetishists, apologies for being out of the drafting pencil sphere but I have an odd rabbit hole I fell down many years ago which I never came to the full conclusion of. A friend had a Mont Blanc Noblesse and I have a rOtring 700 fountain pen, and on examining his pen I realized they were identical aside from the barrels and grip section designs, and they were perfectly interchangeable with each other. I went about trying to find out who OEMed for who, and discovered that either Faber or maybe Lamy or perhaps both had the same pen, just tailored to their design aesthetics, but I came no closer to finding out who was the original manufacturer. I donât believe it was rOtring or Mont Blanc, rOtring was struggling at that time, and the design choice doesnât quite give either Lamy or Faber and big brands keep their cards close to their chests when adopting an outsourced product, so it ended there. All I know is that it was a darling of many German brands in the 90s.
I will say they chose incredibly well, I can sit this rOtring in a drawer for a year and it will start writing immediately and its consistency and durability has made my go to drawing pen for some 20 years. It is superior by an order of magnitude the rOtring art pen, which was honestly a little disappointing, but I feel may have used a very similar nib.
Yes! I was researching the 700 and found out that it shared the tooling from the MB Noblese. The clip was designed by German architects Kleffel-Köhnholdt-Gunderman in 1992.
Yeah, theyâre functionally incredibly well designed in many ways and smoother than any other Mont Blanc, their MeisterstĂŒck line all share a characteristically well-tuned level of feedback on the paper but this is Visconti levels of smooth, which is remarkable for a rigid steel nib. I was certain there was another company that was using it too, but I may be misremembering. I find it odd that Mont Blanc and rOtring would collaborate like that, especially when the Noblesse was at least 3 times the price of the relatively affordable rOtring on release. Anyway! Sorry, back to the pencils.
I found myself in front of a rOtring 700 fountain pen at a pen show dealer showcase tray, with an unsightly dent on the metal body tube. But it has a custom ground OF nib on it. Price was reduced so I bought it. Itâs so beautifully smooth with nice line variation! Because of the design, it can take extra long Waterman ink cartridges. And the nib feed is amazing for not drying out across long periods of no use.
Being steel, you might be able to push a wooden dowel whittled to roughly the same dimensions into the barrel and straighten the dent out a little.
Possibly⊠But itâll never look undented. I figured I would just leave it as-is. Wabi Sabi, you know. ![]()
A couple of fun little finds you might like. Rooting through old boxes looking for isograph parts I found these guys. I want to say theyâre from the early 2000s but I couldnât say for sure and honestly I havenât even given them a google yet, I came here first! The fineliner canât have been used more than a couple of times, but worked like I had bought it yesterday! The pencil has lost its cap, but otherwise works fine. There isnât any such thing as disposable rOtrings.
