Model numbers for Mitsubishi Executive double-knock pencils

Do we know for sure this is a double-knock? Have you seen it with the tip engaged?

Yes, photos are in the link I provided.

Appears to be the same mechanism found in the late-model ¥500 double knocks with rings on the barrel. Faber-Castell also used the same mechanism in a copycat piece (which I think only came in black).

I’ve not seen the mechanisms on those ¥500 models, but I wouldn’t be surprised. This is a later model steel executive double-knock, as you can tell by the price sticker (and price). And by then Mitsubishi was cost cutting. Even this model is so plain looking, like some product manager said to a pencil design engineer “we need a ¥1500 double-knock this year–come up with something out of steel, use an existing mechanism, but keep it very simple and low cost to make.” I think by then if they’d set about making another M3-100, it would’ve cost ¥3000 (at least).

Sucks to see the decline in construction and design. Feels like Transformers toys from 1987 and 1988 as they switched to cheap, softer plastic :pensive:

There was a seller on Mercari who sold 4 of the Jaguar II about almost 2 years ago now. The listings are still up on Mercari. You can check the pictures, the seller shows the box with model ID, M5-2030.

I totally missed these and would have bought one, had I seen them. This is the piece I want more than any other right now.

I’d imagine the only way someone would have found these is if they speficially used the search term “ジャガー”.

Well no wonder I missed it

Excellent! Thank you so much for checking into that. So great to now have the model number! Of course, this will only work if someone is selling it with the box, as loose ones never have the model number indicated (since it’s not stamped on the body). Prices were quite high, but ¥40k for a mint in box example would still be worthwhile.

This is what really pisses me off about Mercari. Their search criteria sophistication is so limited. I’ve tried using multiple terms separated by commas and surrounded by parentheses, and it doesn’t work right, or not at all. So that means more searches saved and launched individually. YAJ is so much better at this (although not perfect).

Excellent – thank you, @Linus2K! :+1:

Is this a stand-alone page you found, or is there a whole catalog for this year?

I have completely forgotten where these pictures came from…But anyway, these are all the pages you can see, as I always try to share them as much as possible

No, I just like to save, or maybe archive any valuable information

Rotated a little and sharpened.

Was bidding 200gbp on this hoping it would end somewhere near. Who was I kidding? Ended up more than twice that!

This and the etched jaguar double knock are basically now ungettable for me.

I was watching this auction too. Yosshy (the seller) made out like a bandit once again. Very competitive bidding on this one.

A Buyee account tried hard but gave up at the finish line of ¥60,000. But notice the winner got that amount, so I think that was their ceiling. Probably another ¥250 could’ve made that Buyee account the winner.

Anyway, this “Matsuda” account is a frequent bidder on many auctions. I think they may be some kind of proxy that’s not marketed to customers from USA/EU. Same for Yamada.

The pickings of the more desirable vintage mechanical pencils has diminished a lot over the past 6+ months. I wonder if those folks who’ve had vintage pencils in their collection have sold what they’ve had and there’s just a lot less around. Also, Mercari has been extremely sensitive to past sale prices. So many sellers are checking and bumping up prices accordingly as they list pencils. It’s getting harder to find good deals.
