POSTDRAW: their version of the side-release double knock mechanism. Very clean, almost minimalist design. I’m leaning more toward the silver version for its MUJI-like aesthetic. The grooved grip feels sure and isn’t cut too deeply or widely to cause irritation.
The tips have minimal wobble and I really like how Luddite is staying the course with its distinctive silhouette for its ‘second generation’ cone design, spearheaded by the TECHDRAW 2. This is also true of the clip design, which is reminiscent of some models from FC and even Tombow’s LZ series.
EVERDRAW: kudos to Luddite for making a non-limited product featuring real wood parts. It was so painful seeing all the crazy second-hand prices for their limited run wooden TECHDRAW (1) series. With EVERDRAW, you just have to be patient and monitor your preferred Japanese e-tailer on Rakuten etc.
The initial offerings included choices for a light-reddish Cherry Wood and a darker brown Walnut. I picked Walnut for the richer color and better contrast with the chromed brass section.
The feel and balance are great and the knock has a very distinct and precise sound — this is not a mushy or quiet clicker. For those who hate rattling parts, the button fits snugly with zero wobble.
The chuck is metal and is a double-screw in design. It is first threaded to mate with the cone, and then a second set of threads attaches securely to the grip. Very much in the league of a Kaweco Special or a Staedtler Hexagonal, except for not having o-rings fitted.
Honestly, I haven’t felt so satisfied with a new MP product since I picked up my first Pilot S20. I encourage everyone to give this a try!
P.S. Luddite has already released an EVERDRAW with black coated metal parts. Very handsome but you know what happens to black metal parts if you use them on a regular basis…
I have both and I love their design. I love the Postdraw and the side knock, but mine has a problem where when I retract the tip, the lead breaks. I read that this is a common problem with them. If it weren’t for that, I would say the mechanical pencil is perfect. As for the Everdraw, the quality is impressive, the mechanical pencil doesn’t have any rattling. They say the grip on the black one is better because it’s less slippery. But, in my opinion, the silver one is prettier.
Lucio is doing a thin lead colab with Luddite. Steel and carbon fiber design. He is submitting final design this week. He expects it to be released at 590&co first, maybe by year end if we are lucky.
Prices have gone up a little since January, but the difference between Amazon JP and USA is small enough to make buying from USA a better deal (no proxy or shipping).
When I was comparing prices on Buyee vs. Amazon, buying on Amazon was just a little cheaper, but that was in December and early Jan. IIRC it was literally less than a dollar difference once you factor in the Buyee fees (I did not include domestic, and then international shipping). It may still be a good option for those who do not want to open a proxy. Of the ones I bought, most arrived in just a few weeks. One took about a month to ship which was concerning, but it finally made it.
I have purchased several times directly from Amazon.co.jp and they will ship to the US.
Right now for theEverDraw Mechanical Pencil Wood Model 0.5mm, Walnut LDW-MP4WN-05
From Amazon Japan, it is US$33.08 (¥4950) + $16.78 (¥2511), for a total of $49.86
From Amazon US, it is US$39.44
If I were purchasing 3 from Amazon Japan, it would be US$97.64 (¥14613) + $18.27 (¥2734), for a total of $115.91 of US$38.64 each.
