Leadholders & Clutch Pencils

That eight-jaws clutch with fluted pushbutton is so cool! I had no idea there were eight-prongs mouthpieces around, as my KIN 48 comes with a perfectly standard 4-jaws grip system. I think I have one clutch pencil with more jaws, but I am unsure it is just a 6-jaws model or something weirder — will have to check.

Early Leadmaster for 8 leaf collet…too wiggy though..wobbly centering

So there were R-Z’s with wood barrels… As noted, I know they had hard rubber ( O: Simichrome will shine them…), then plastic (Bakelite?), but wood? That’s interesting..

I only know of R-Z with plastic or hardrubber barrels, nothing wooden as far as I know — but I know veeeery little about Renta; we need a German collector with a large catalogue to help pinpointing the right conclusion. Also, leadholder/Dennis B. Smith only mentions hardrubber or plastic.

Multi-leaf collets:

Leadmaster had 6 (not 8) for a while… R-Z did have eight…and evidently did some private label examples as well

Private label pencils are the wildest corner of the arena. Delightful specimen!

It does clutch the crayons so I hope this qualifies, it is a three colored bundle of slide holders. What makes them even more interesting is their use as map markers in the WWI germany but they were even found used in the chinese military from the 2nd sinojapanese war. The red and blue holders being longer than the white one are the best indicator of their use. Lexikaliker has a collection of a number of map marking pencils. A today niche topic that I found was worth sharing

E Faber made a series of map marker sets for the “German” market…the TAKTIK series…before, during and after WW2

Yes, indeed: it is an eight-jaws chuck.

… and a few more colours. Renta definitely had a ‘thing’ about having lots of colours. It seems as though government departments were their biggest marketing target as many of my Rentas & Fedras were marked either ‘Bundesbahn Eigentum’ or ‘Plankammer’ like the ones in the image. A kind of circular economy of the day.

Does anyone know if the imprint says ‘Renta Zeichner 20’ or ‘Renta Zeichner 2D’ or something else?

Very nice, simple but functional.

Yes, the transition for Renta from a propeller to the “K”, being a combo propeller + twist lock so that it could truly be used for drafting…

This person converted what I assume is a ballpoint pen to a clutch pencil. I know it is simple, but I wonder if there was an actual dedicated clutch pencil like this in the past. Could there be any advantages? Was there ever a ‘convertible’ leadholder-ballpoint pen type?
