Hello. A short while ago, I won an auction for a gigantic lot of mechanical pencils and pens from Yahoo Auctions Japan. The listing photographs were terrible, and just piled up without any info in the description.
Here is the original listing photo:
Well, it amounted to something like 120 pens and pencils of various types, and it took me a long time to organize, check, and photograph everything. But here it is, all of the items in this lot.
I think my eyeballs locked on to the Pilot Sprinter in the bottom middle of the original photo
The Tombow SH-500LG is the (later) version without the milling around the nose cone. PG7 is always a nice find, as is the H-2085 (maybe needs a couple drops of oil for the grip) and the 2 H-109x. The Pilot WORKER BP & MP are also nice. Newton Lava too.
Some models I never ‘got into’: the whole batch of Platinum Bee Line in your last photo that seem stylistically un-connected to the models that were like a lower-tier to the premier ‘Z’ line. The 2x Burberry Kerry are also nice finds.
The Sprinter was one of the main reasons I started bidding! I realized that the auction was likely to be another collector’s entire hoard being tossed out by an unconcerned family member…
All the Sakuras in there are nice, few in there I am still looking to finish my collection. Plus the pilot quattro duo is cool! I havent seen the gunmetal finish one before! Platinum beelines are not very popular but the quality is very good and they all have a weight to them. Its a very very nice bulk buy!
Very nice score! Looks like you’ve got 4 of the Mitsubishi Pure Malt 5000’s, the capped mechanical pencil, plus a couple of the ballpoints. They’re very nicely made.
The Sprinter is a nice one – looks to have the labeling intact. And the PILOT H-2085 with wooden grip is a keeper.
Were all of these visible in the auction, or did many of these end up as “hidden gems?”
I noticed the rOtring Newton pencil. Nice one. Are you keeping it or selling?
Incredible. I mean, I could pick out the PILOT Sprinter peeking out, but the H-2085 wasn’t visible… only a couple of the Pure Malt 5000’s… and the PILOT Murex and MYU fountain pens weren’t visible either. A nice condition Murex (long steel integrated nib pen) can net $150~$200. A nice condition MYU (pocket version of Murex) can go for about the same or higher. VERY nice score on that!
What did you see that inspired your bidding on it? Were there a few pens/pencils of interest to you?
I saw the Sprinter, Accugraph etc. and had a feeling that the lot was originally owned by someone who collected stationery, and was likely to include other good stuff.
Very cool. What was the auction listing on YAJ?
I’m just curious how they titled it. I often search for pen/pencil lots with PILOT as part of the keywords… and this didn’t show.
