I understand that you used a computer standoff as a starting point, but how do you attach the mechanism? Is there an internal lip to prevent it from sliding out?

No, there is no lip. I’ve done different trial and error approaches each time.
Press fitting an end cap with a carefully centered hole.
Drilling a hole in a threaded rod.
Enlarging the hole to press fit a brass tube.
