Is there a pencil/pen/stationery object you’ve been hunting for a while? I’m a newbie so my pencils have mainly been cool stuff I find in store, but I would like to learn about some rare collectibles people are searching for!
Well - check here.
Long story short - purchased my first mechanical pencil in 1989 - it’s stolen in 1998 - it took me until August 2025 to work out what it was (searching daily for all that time) - then about 2 weeks to get hold of one (thanks to the wonderful friendly community here at Knockology!)
The Kuretake MP-77
I have several that I hope to find some day. Here are a couple that come to mind. These are ones that I have only seen once at auction
Pentel P1135W (or P1135N-W) White
Pentel P225F Orange
Of course there are the ones that show up at auction every year or so that are out of my price range, but the ones above…
The first which come to my mind are the Faber-Castell Tekagraph 9604 “rund”, and the short Caran d’Ache Fixpencil 23 “Fabrication Suisse”: always at the top of my most-wanted list, for years, and both quite elusive — especially the former.
I found the Tekagraph thanks to this forum, and the 23 outside, but with a key contribution from one of the Knockologists here. ![]()
I still have some pieces on my list: some are available once in a while, but at an unattainable price point (Pentel QX, I am talking to you!), whereas some others are just veeery hard to find (the Haff ellipsograph 0.5mm compass insert; o lost accessory, where art thou?).
My (current) Unobtanium is a couple of missing pieces from Sakura’s ‘Astrology’ Create Sharp series… 12 aluminum pencils with 6 red and 6 blue Zodiac signs. Still missing a Taurus (Bull), Cancer (Crab), Leo (Lion) and Aquarius (Water Jar). Maybe the stars will align somehow? ![]()
Pentel QX, of course. And well, you know, on Reddit, a guy posted a picture of a Mitsubishi M5-50 on a red cloth, a beautiful pencil in the photo. I thought, wow, I would love one. And well, I got a really good copy, but I didn’t like it enough to use it.
My father was an engineer and he had a few 1970’s-1980’s Japanese mechanical pencils (his work had him travel to Japan regularly so he may have bought them there). I found them fascinating, they were mostly executive-style (I never saw a knurled grip in his hands) while I had to make do with a Pentel PG309 and a Conté Criterium (not bad at all, but that wasn’t my thinking at the time). Unfortunately there was a (decades-long) eclipse in my passion for MPs, during which they all disappeared…
Now that I’m interested again there’s one in particular that I’d like to find. It was a long and thin all-metal affair (either stainless steel or chromed brass). The body was a completely straight and sleek cylinder, that transitioned sharply to a cone in the same colour. I don’t know if the cone was a separate part or if it was of one piece with the body but the transition appeared seamless. I don’t think there was a sleeve (but I’m not completely sure). It had a clip but beyond that I have no recollection of the knock end (or even if there was a knock, it could have been a twist mechanism).
Some Cross MPs come close, but the clip shape doesn’t ring a bell and I’m pretty sure it was all silver, without the black tip. The closest I could find are the Sailor 800 (similar shape, maybe a bit short, sleek cone but the colour doesn’t match between the cone and body) and the Platinum ML-800 (the closest in shape, with matching colours but with longitudinal ridges), although neither one is a perfect match so the quest is still on.
Yes, that QX is one of those out of my price range (right now).
I’ll just drop this here…
…my missing list is all my white whales.
I feel like it’s just tumbleweeds out there at present.
I really need a Variable-4
Wait, wait. You found the 23 and the 9604? Unbelievable.
That’s what I still think when I look at the pair. The 23 is an ad pencil with a spurious imprint on one side, but still (I also discovered that they were probably considered promotional items from the very beginning, and given away on special occasions rather than being actual stock-ready pieces). Will have to take some pictures to strengthen my perception of being the owner of those. ![]()
Also, there was an auction for another 23 on a platform recently — a green piece, i.e. a collab with the Swiss Army: very sought-after — but the bidding war was fierce, and I hat to withdraw after my budget was grossly overcome. Another time, maybe…
The Faber-Castell TK 9400 sterling silver 50th Anniversary leadholder is mine, currently- but more out of cost than availability
Yes, I was just looking at one for sale last night and wondering why I would ever pay one or two thousand dollars for it.
The amount they’re asking on eBay is definitely wild.
