When was the M-301 released?

Do we know when the M-301 was released?

I wish I had better documentation but my notes say: “since 1983”

My first ever MP-301 came around 1984 and stayed with me well into the late 90’s. Not sure what happened to it, but at least on the exterior, it seems to be the exact same design.

I currently own a modern one which I enjoy using.

This might be the most ubiquitous MP in American history. I feel like it was the main offering in every Office Depot, Office Max, CopyMax, CompUSA, etc etc for at least two decades.

I do keep an occasional lookout for interesting variants but the changes are only to the printed markings on the steel barrel. I was thinking that MAYBE the oldest / original version could be equipped with a brass clutch but, no, all of my M301 are plastic clawed.
