So… this EXISTS.
Twitter thread…
Did you snag it, Kelvin?
Not me, no way. First time I laid eyes on this.
I am pretty certain I’ve seen the 0.4 LG before. I don’t use 0.4 mm, so I ignored it. So, I’m feeling like it was a production model, just didn’t sell very well.
I’ve never seen a 0.4. I believe I would have noticed the green accent immediately and zoned in on it. Hmm
And of course it sold for peanuts on Mercari
I think there’s something weird going on with most 0.4 tombows from that era. It’s the first time I see that LG 0.4, and the monotech 1000 0.4 is also absurdly rare and expensive compared to the other sizes. I don’t know if a monotech 500 0.4 exists as well.

1988 Tombow catalog, 0.4 written on the display case but not on the product listing.
OH MAH GAHD
My life will not be complete until I snag one of these.
It’s got the grooved tip, too (which is the earliest/nicest version of the LG tips).
What THE WHAT?!?!
The LG is another that is never mention (seemingly)…
But a 0.4???
It’s BEAUTIFUL…
I dislike the yellow on the 0.3’s so much…. GREEN is just…
I’ve not seen another 0.4 mm since this thread brought it up. Seems it is stupid-rare.
I have a few in other sizes, but a couple have some bad pitting to the chrome accents. I could not get it to clean up. Grabbed a couple replacements that look good, with sticker.
I’m not at home so I can’t take one of them apart. I’m hopeful the chuck is brass. Kind of miffed at Tombow, discovering a number of models ended up with plastic chucks. What a cop-out. I’ve seen some really cheap no-name steel executive pencils that sell for chump-change having a brass clutch. I can’t believe it was really much of a savings to use plastic.
On the LG its brass, I have one in 0,7
Thanks for confirming.
These ¥500 TOMBOW LG pencils punch up higher, more like ¥800. The metal machining on the grip is nicely done, too. They’ve very light though. And the plastic body could be a little nicer material.
Did the LG come in 0.9mm??
Nice catch, Patrick! So I wasn’t imagining it.
I don’t know how long Rakuma auction histories last, but here’s the link: Rakuma
The color shifts in the photos… sometimes the writing appears blue, other times green. I’m suspecting it’s green, as the 0.7 mm size is definitely in blue.
EDIT: Silly me… first photo actually shows them side-by-side. Of course it’s green.
As for 0.9LG, I’m pretty sure there was one. Label color would be orange. There was definitely one in 0.9LZ.
