Why does the smash text on the original 0.5 look like they are engraved or are they? (but not the other diameters)
It’s just screen printed text. Probably changes to the stamp over the decades.
That blue metallic version is beautiful. Was that a collaboration or limited release?
Those ballpoints… so nice! I wish Pentel would bring them back.
Did Pentel reuse the lead indicator for ballpoint thickness? Such as EF, F, M, B ?
Yup that’s exactly it.

@Pdunc67 this is a very detailed explanation of the subtle differences in purple Smash models ![]()
limited but available everywhere in Japan.
Is there any way to tell it’s age?
When did Q1005 swap to Smash?
I know I had the 0.5 on the rubber button that is long gone.
As I understand it, the ‘non-Smash’ Q100x marked ones were export models.
Here are some from my collection. The information are accurate to my knowledge, but correct me if I am wrong. And sorry about the poor lighting and shadow.

My latest video is finally ready: a complete history of the Pentel Smash Q100x, including manufacturing date codes, production generations, limited editions, designer history, and a few hidden features that many owners may not know about.
I also wanted to give a sincere thank you to the members of the Knockology forum who contributed photographs, shared knowledge, answered questions, and helped me research this project. Several sections of this video simply would not have been possible without the collective expertise of this community.
Special thanks as well to Nimrodd for his mechanical pencil identification guide and to everyone who has helped preserve and document the history of these pencils over the years.
I hope you enjoy it.
Great work, Patrick!
Your videos are truly library reference material. Great information for the ages. Anyone interested in historical mechanical pencils will find them invaluable. ![]()
Thanks, Gary!
