I took a moment to write to Brian and he responded. Some good answers, too.

Our setup is super budget but gets the job done. The grey matt is a silicone dish drying matt and we use a simple LED lightbox… both from Amazon. We have so many models that come and go… we can’t afford to do it any other way

Hmm, I still think it’s an optical illusion. They aren’t being balanced on top of the ridges/peaks in between the pen tray slots but rather the pen tray is flipped over and they’re sitting in between the slots now but appear to be perched. I don’t have a tray but like this

So yes, you’re right – optical illusion. Pretty cool. Alas, the dish matt doesn’t look to be a practical storage solution… but works nicely for photography.
