Uchida Type E - video review

Here’s my most recent video - on the Type E.
Thank you @drifand Kelvin for telling me how to take it apart (I was too chicken to experiment).

We still don’t have definitive answers on a release date but , but I do have some supporting evidence in the video that ties it to at least 1971.

Please have a look and let me know what you think. I’m going to make it public in a few days

Excellent video, as usual.
On a side note, it is quite common to come across Uchida drafting sets similar to the one you show but with pencils from other brands (examples here and here). Do you know if the set came without pencils, for the user to fill with their favourite brand, or do you think that users replaced the original pencils after they broke, or were sold?

Thank you - I’m glad you liked it. I am not sure on the orig contents. I was tipped off about this set by @griffisu (Thank you again). Here is griffsu’s OP and link to Yahoo

Great job, Patrick! Only thing bugging me was that the cutout of the gold E model seemed to have it’s tail sheath not fully inserted? Did that affect the measurements for overall length?

Thank you

Yeah - I saw that too.
The measurements were done with the barrel fully seated. This was just a rookie mistake.

Hi @Pdunc67 : at around 5:26 you say that the box contained as well an erasing shield, some paperwork, a plastic ruler, and a cleaning rag. I think the plastic ruler is in fact a plastic protractor (measuring angles rather than distances). Not sure if it worth correcting the voiceover for this, I just felt a bit confused by the mismatch between the name and the actual object I was looking at in the frame.

Excellent job as always!

Thanks @Leonov Eolo - ahh darn it - this is what happens when I try to do this without a script lol

I may just leave it but I can at least correct it in the closed captions.
Thank you for letting me know.

Looks just like the set I purchased, but mine does not have the outer box, and is missing the bottom silver piece between the pencils and the lead.

Great video on a truly beautiful and functional pencil.

In the lineup, do you know which was the premium model, the type E or the type D?

Thank you for watching it -
I am really not sure on that. @drifand Kelvin had suggested “D” for Deluxe so maybe that’s the elevated model?

Circumstantial evidence: Only the Drawing Sharp D was sold in a stand alone red velvet lined hard case. E models came in cardboard boxes, or the rarer green PVC triangular case. The few catalog scans we have seen also price the D (¥2000) above the E (¥1500) and S (¥1000) or KN (¥1000).

oh - never seen this before! Can I use this in my other Uchida videos?
Do you know what year this is from?

I don’t know the year. But… the D used to be priced lower at ¥1900 back in '77.

And… the KENT brand went defunct in 1979, so the previous scan with ‘UCHIDA’ branded D must be closer to 1980s.
