These are very special graphite and colored pencils!

Thank you
I love them because of the utility of them in addition to being “just a pencil”

Given the special uses of these pencils, even the Pentel Black Polymer 999 looks pretty normal

It is quite impressive: these special pencils no longer exist, the activities for which these pencils were once manufactured are no longer carried out and in some cases even the manufacturer no longer exists. It won’t be long before these pencils present the observer with an unsolvable riddle!

Do you collect pencils like these?

Yes, these are mine. I am fascinated by the way things work and the way things used to work. The instructo pencils are yellow, but through a projector they show up black. Overhead projectors are no longer a thing but they were a key piece of equipment growing up. I really like the existential piece of giving something (or someone) true appreciation when there’s nothing else to remember it.
Take a photograph from 1940 as an example. If that person is a middle aged adult then it can almost be concluded that they’re no longer with us. But in that photo they are in their prime, it’s a moment caught in time. Maybe they’re still remembered and maybe not, but in this moment I will recognize that they were real and someone’s friend or what have you and I will appreciate them at least as far as that.
Same with these pencils. They had a life and their day of creation was for a purpose that was necessary. It’s sad to think of them being thrown away. Sure they’re an inanimate object, but its utility is real.

…..hopefully not too deep

Overhead projectors are no longer a thing

They are still widely used in schools and universities in my country.. (Edit: Sorry, I read it as a general statement)
So the blue color is non-copying? Non-copying inks are still in use today, so I would like to ask what specific use they were for that doesn’t exist today anymore. I suppose technical drawing that moved to the digital world in general?

They’re not in use in my daily life. I haven’t seen an overhead projector in person in a very long time. It’s great to think there is always a use for these things somewhere.
The blue Xerox pencils are non copying in that they are able to “disappear” when used on a piece of paper that you want to make copies of on a “Xerox” machine or other manufacturers.

I like your thoughts and the details! I think I can relate. A long time ago I used the typewriter, the overhead projector, the spirit duplicator, the epidiascope and some other things which are no longer in use, and I remember them fondly.

The Instructo pencil is interesting! I wonder how it works. It reminds me of the graphite pencils which had additives to make their writing more opaque for light tracing (diazotype).

No, not at all!

I assume it’s made of some waxy type of material that doesn’t allow light through.

I have a predisposition to also want to buy ANYTHING that interests me from the USA or that has an Eagle on it.
I can’t even sing the Star Spangled Banner and not get a little choked up.
