In a small lot of mixed pencils I received today there was a rOtring Tikky SC 0.5; what I did not expect to find was a writing tip which does not present the usual metal sleeve I’ve seen so far on any other Tikky model, but rather a retractable tip similar to other “writing-type” MP. I confirm the bumpier and “softer” grip — but it remains a type of pencil I cannot really manage to love.
Pictures tomorrow, as it is too dark now. By the way: is it a common model, or a mildly rare one? I don’t remember having seen many around (but then again, I never really looked for such a specimen).
It seems that is one of the earlier gen ones, yeah. Same for the T 0.5 I believe.
The white Specials confused me the most though. Haven’t really delved in yet, but those seem to have the most variations with the different bands and what not.
For sure! From what I’ve gathered, it seems to coincide with the switch to the clips saying ‘Germany’. According to @Pdunc67 s ‘theory B’ from his rOtring Tikky Timeline, that would’ve happened around 1995. Now I would’ve expected the clip switch (from ‘W. Germany’ to ‘Germany’) not to have lasted that long (1991 as the latest production cycle). But I haven’t seen any old script, ‘Germany’ clips.
I have two of the aluminum 3 in 1’s, but I never really enjoyed the grip, and the pencil module fits into an Ohto Multi better than their stock module so I’m afraid they’re getting slowly cannibalized and finding new life. If anyone wants one with original stock parts, I’m happy to part with it.
I have a question about the Tikky II (#14 in your image - to the left of the PaperMate).
It states ‘1998-2008’ - I have owned this exact same model (my absolute first MP!) since 1982 (I have a photo of me with it in my pocket from the London premiere of the movie ‘ET - The Extraterrestrial’ - dating it to the day after my birthday - August 13, 1982). I was gifted it by a German exchange student at high school.
It’s so cool to hear about the personal history people have with their pencils. Regarding the manufacturing dates for the Tikky II, the 1998-2008 range I mentioned comes from information compiled by the rOtring Museum. I’d love to learn more about your pencil—does it have any specific markings like “W. Germany” or “Germany” on the clip, or perhaps a red ring? Those details could help pinpoint its exact origins. Can you post the picture? I’m sure @Dux may be able to help.
