The 文房具屋さん大賞 (Stationery Shop Grand Prize) doesn’t seem to get discussed much in English, which is a shame — it’s one of the few Japanese stationery awards that isn’t a manufacturer popularity contest. The winners are chosen by buyers at specialty stationery shops, i.e. the people who actually stock and sell this stuff for a living.
For 2026 the overall Grand Prize went to a mechanical pencil: the LACONIC Solid Write. It’s machined from solid aluminium with a deliberately low centre of gravity, so the mass sits down toward the sleeve rather than up in the barrel. The stated design goal is reduced fatigue on long writing sessions rather than any new mechanism.
The other top awards:
- Functionality — Pilot FriXion Synergy 3 (three-colour erasable gel, 0.4 mm Synergy Tip)
- Design — Sakura Crepas Komagoma A4 file, stands upright and fans open to sort small bits
- Idea — Sun-Star UFO Flat Pouch (clear flat case with a reflective keychain, aimed at the oshikatsu crowd)
A few of the category winners are more relevant to a pencil case than the headline trophies:
- Eraser — Seed Kadoloop. Seed being the Kadokeshi people; the Kadoloop is built to keep regenerating sharp erasing corners as it wears down.
- Gel pen — Pilot Juice Up 3 (three 0.4 mm barrels in one body)
- Fountain pen — Sailor Profit Casual L
- File — Kokuyo Campus binder with the quick-open ring mechanism
- Pen case — Sun-Star “cicada shell” (semi no nukegara)
- Washi tape — mt Write & Draw, perforated so you can write on it and tear it cleanly into labels and page flags
The frustrating part, and the reason I’m posting this here rather than just bookmarking it: a good chunk of these are domestic-release items that never hit Western retail, and the popular colourways tend to evaporate within a few weeks of an award announcement. The Solid Write in particular isn’t something you’ll find sitting on a US retailer’s site. If you’re already using one of the proxies people discuss in the Proxy Help threads, it’s worth having the award list in front of you.

Has anyone here actually handled the Solid Write? I’m curious how it sits next to the usual heavy drafting suspects — aluminium instead of the rOtring 600’s brass should come out lighter overall, but with the balance biased further down.
