Teardrop Brass Hex Mechanical Pencil by Nicholas Hemingway

There’s a new pencil from Nicholas Hemingway.

Anyone backing it?

Seems slippery.

This design appears… generic? Uninspired?

They define it as being “tactile”. I believe I can find twenty equally “tactile” items within twenty feet of any Home Depot’s entrance.

(And what’s inside? Maybe I missed that part?)

Not ragging on it, just throwing out my initial thoughts :innocent::grin:.

I like the tapering, but I’d probably prefer a rounder body, something more similar to a rOtring Art Pencil or to a Tekagraph “rund”: hex designs are perfectly fine, but I’m at that point in my life where I prefer smoother shapes to anything associated with sharp corners — even vaguely.

Still, seems a very well-crafted object.

Not my kind of thing these “minimalistic” designs, but it’s an interesting pen turner’s challenge — make body round to hex or hex to round, like they did on the OHTO Horizon (which I think came up rather well as an object).

The OG hex to round body was the Tru-point 120. https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalpencils/s/Fg2XfLm6pz

The Tru-point is aluminum and it feels like the barrel wall is consistent thickness along the length, meaning it was not milled down but rather was stamped, drawn, or pressed into shape.

I’m going to bite my tongue. I’ve said my piece about minimalist kickstarters before. Lathe, meet ideas.

Uh-uh love it. I have one, it’s a beauty. My favourite feature on the Tru Points though is the “auto” lead feed which is similar to the Stabilos

To be fair, that’s on brand for him.

Almost all of Nicolas Hemingway’s pieces are generic and uninspired. He doesn’t even taper the body to the radius of the p200 tip on most of his pencils.

With that being said I own like 5 of his, so I certainly am not in the position to criticize.

I guess I’m in the minority here but - from the pictures - I rather like it. The transition from hexagonal to circular is pleasing to me.

I was planning on getting one of his 5000 year old bog-oak pencils (fully aware that I am a total marketing victim) but I might actually spring for this instead.

I have purchased a couple of P205 modified pencils from him before. I posted about them on my blog back in 2020. As I said in the post (and @River posted), they were just straight tubes without any taper down to the tip.

About 75% of the way down.
