Streamlined Sixties 🇺🇸

After the fabulous Fifties pairing of the Lincoln Futura and Scripto Satellite I wondered what the Sixties would bring? As luck would have it, I spied a lovely flash of metallic turquoise on the Hot Wheels rack at my local Toys ‘R’ Us. While Hot Wheels tends to be less refined in terms of proportions and wheel sizes, sometimes they just hit the sweet spot for a great representation.

In this case, what we have is a ‘66 Buick Riviera with a sleek louvered style grill design. I don’t know much more about it but I believe the grill conceals the headlights… which kinda mirrors the pop-out deployment mechanism of the Tru Point USA Automatic Lead Holder.

And since I was lucky enough to obtain a Technical Eraser holder in the same shade of turquoise blue, I had to include it as well. I really like how the horizontal lines on the Riviera’s grill are also seen in the grip grooves on the two Tru Points. A nostalgic trip from out of the blue!

I love the colors!
My parents had one of these in red (the car).

is your local Toys ‘R’ Us still open? I think they are all closed here in the states now. (sad)

Hey Patrick, if you have any photos of the family car I’d love to see it!

And yes, TRU is still alive and kicking here in Singapore! Hard to believe but there are 13 stores here in our little island state, and it is also found in Hong Kong and Thailand, I believe. I think these Asian franchises were financially separate entities so the shutdown in USA didn’t bring them down. It seems they’re are back from the brink?

When I was in New Orleans for a trade conference many MANY years ago, I went to a TRU and bought a giant sized VOLTRON combiner robot. Managed to ship it home from the PO too!

I believe they are still alive and kicking in the Philippines too. They had a department store presence when I visited a few years back.

When I take my son to school in the morning, we go past a shuttered Toys R Us location. I told him about the Toys R Us lore and explained how, when I was a kid, I wouldn’t even consider going to Walmart or Target for toys—the selection was paltry compared to Toys R Us.

This clearly left an impression, as every time we pass the location, he now asks why Toys R Us is gone and if it’ll ever be coming back. He imagines how many more Transformers and Pokémon would have been in Toys R Us compared to Target/Walmart, and I’m afraid he’ll never recover
