Staedtler 770 reissue

Are any of you picking up the reissue of the Staedtler 770?

The original 770 series was released in 1978 and was discontinued in 1990.
After 34 years the 770 series is being reissued.

How do pre-release purchases work on Buyee? I have a 0.3 and 0.5 on pre-order. The vendor lists Sept 29 as the sale date. So, does that me they will order it from the OEM on the 29th, or will they sell it to me on the 29th?

Overall I’m happy with the reissue, however i feel the knurling on original was slightly better.
Also, the text on the body is fuzzy and not as crisp as on the original release.

The original looks way more detailed, almost as if the new ones are AI and the old ones are reality.

Can I ask if you got these through buyee or zen market?

Are the two press seams of the barrel of your specimens also clearly visible? The old Micrograph didn’t have any. On my 0.5, the print is on the press seam :unamused:

@Pdunc67 - are the grips interchangeable between the OG and reissues?

Yes - the new ones have visible mold lines. Faint but they are there :disappointed:

All four of mine have mold lines. Some above the text, some below. And you are right - I inspected my original under a macro lens and it’s perfectly smooth.

I was unable to remove the grip from my original release. Honestly, I have never tried until today. It didn’t seem to be a press fit like the reissue, and it also didn’t seem to unscrew. I didn’t want to force it, but if you can tell me how it comes off, I’ll try again. The reissue grip slides right off with ease.

I can say that the tips are interchangeable, so that may be a way to restore an old 770 with a bent tip.

Here are the pencils with their tips
As you can see there have been some design/quality changes

Here is an image with the tips swapped

I wish they had used the original knurling pattern on the grip.

Thanks for testing it out! It’s good to know the tips are swappable, at least.

Do you know how the grip comes off? I can pull a little harder, I am overly careful at times :joy: .

Thanks for the term ‘mold line’ As a German I had to look it up and found also ‘burr’ but I wasn’t sure.

Back to the topic. Yes, the mold line is faint but when the marking sits exactly on the line it doesn’t look good. – It’s a shame that the new 770 has a plastic thread for the tip.

Incidentally, I didn’t manage to remove the grip either. And yes, I too prefer the old knurling.

Really? I would get the 0.5mm and 0.7mm. I wonder if it will be permanent? I do fear that the originals will increase in price because of it.

Don’t do it! I couldn’t pull off the grips on my OGs.
