OK, another quick entry… I think my first contact with a GT40 was, again, through a toy—and it was a Transformer. Right around 2006 when manufacturing technology was getting stupendous in the amount of detail and complexity that could be stuffed into a 1/24 scale car, TOMY released a TF toy modelled realistically after the then-current [Ford GT](https in hotrod red with white racing stripes. I didn’t know it at the time, but the design of the modern GT was deeply influenced by the original GT40 from the 1960s!
Fast forward to 2019 and I’m enjoying the heck out of Ford vs Ferrari. The sky blue scheme of Ken Miles’ No. 1 car with those splashes of red and sleek white lines and roundels became the definitive version in my mind. Once I decided to do this cars-matched-with-pens project, I had no doubt that Ken’s GT40 would be featured.
Just as the real GT40 had to be heavily modified and tuned to be a winner, I decided a highly customisable platform would be needed for the pen or pencil. And so, I picked a Smash. Light blue main body, a bright red front section, clear studs to represent the windows and headlights, and a white lead indicator to mirror the stripes and number roundels. Left the black rubber button and clip for the tires. Do we have a winner?
