Rings of Old: uni5-550

The uni5-550 is one of those Mitsubishi models that I got to know gradually over the years. It started with the orange ring version on Yahoo Japan Auctions, without a box. I was in my early ‘I just need one of each design series’ phase and for all intents and purposes, I thought this was it: a single model in 0.5mm.

What was interesting was the 12-sided lattice grip design, which seemed to be shared with at least 2 other Mitsubishi models, BOXY The Stick and a Castell XF-303 (aka Mitsubishi U-303).

Years passed and suddenly I saw a YELLOW ringed version. Same old 0.5; just a different ring. OK, better grab it then.

And I just knew: if there were two colors, then there was probably at least one more. Trouble was, the uni5-550 wasn’t well documented; I hadn’t seen it in any catalogs. I’d only learned about the model number through ‘Tegu’s Stationery Blog’, which documented a yellow ring version.

In the end, I got the last color, a blue ring, through Elton, aka Singapore Mechanical Pencils. And now here they are, united at last.

Would you be able to share the dates between these two?

The black Uni has quite the unique lead hardness indicator. The kneeling grip itself turns. Any insight?

Always appreciated

Well, the ‘black one’ is an M3-551. Since it follows the more modern Mx- numbering, AND its model is 551, I would say it came after the uni5-550.

That sentence really hit home

What phase would you say you are in currently?

Current phase: Eclectic Completist

Some beautiful classics like the QCs or even the Pilot High-Mecha Holders don’t have the same kind of hold over me.

Right?…. I thought that embodied collecting as a whole, not just a phase :flushed:
