Amongst the many different colors and finishes for Pilot’s Quatro line, the all-gunmetal and all-matte black tank amongst the top 5 for me. The square profile exudes personality and style, the finishes are quietly elegant and sophisticated. And in the midst of the Great Vintage Drought of 2020-2025, I pounced, not on a rare version of a pen or pencil, but on a curio: a yellow and black Quatro presentation tray that might have been used in pen stores, or perhaps gifted with a purchase to customers.
There are some members who have shared cautionary tales of fragile paint work or scratch-prone finishes, but I have been lucky so far. I do acknowledge that I have other Quatro pencils with a mix of enamel paint and chromed highlights that have suffered something akin to “laser rot” on compact discs.
After each use or weekly rotation, I am mindful to wipe them down with a soft cloth, to avoid leaving hand oils that might contribute to their deterioration. I think it’s a small price to pay for the privilege of enjoying them after 4 decades and counting.

Aaaaand here we go! Audi Quattro (1987) x Pilot Quatro (1980s)… All hail the world’s first production car with AWD and Pilot’s first (probably) square profile pen series.
