ACTUALLY, that looks like 3D08A.
Oh - that’s good news.
shiny finish: metal material, “earlier version”
matte finish: plastic material, “later version”
The earlier version of the pencil has deeper and more pronounced grooves on the grip compared to the later version.
In South Korea, we called it H-208X. (compared with H-56X, H108X, etc.)
Thank you, @Raheal !

It’s my article. for your reference ![]()
The H-x8x series includes a variety of models: the H-58x, 108x, 1585, and 208x.
Compared with H-56x, 109x series.
Thank you! I’ll be sure to mention you as a source. This is perfect.
Mokume: 木目 = 나뭇결 (wood grain or wood texture)
After doing some research, I found that there is a product with a 2006 Pilot warranty card included. In a 2007 article, it was mentioned, “Unfortunately, this mechanical pencil is something we can no longer keep close to us.” Although not entirely certain, it seems that 2006 was the last year of production.
The photo below shows the full set. It looks no different from a typical Pilot product.
The warranty card above is for the S20, and the one below is for the H-2083. (From a 2011 article)
I’m not very sure about the knob. A well-known Korean collector named “Cuirassier” mentioned that the glossy metal is probably an older version. However, the catalog consistently shows a matte finish(1988, 1995), and the knob of a product bought in the 2000s is glossy(2006). Based on this, it seems the finish might have changed from matte to glossy.
Very interesting. I had felt like there were times when the grooves seemed more distinct and other times a little more muted. So this was a production difference?
Is the middle one in this photo you created the earlier version?
Keep in mind that it’s also possible for a manufacturer to have many bins of the various parts and that there can be “carry over” parts inventory between production runs. So, it’s quite possible for a part from a first release to end up on a second release. Usually it’s just a few examples but who knows–there could have been more in some cases.
Great video Pdunc.
at roughly 3:10 you show a scroll through of a PDF of Pilot’s 2018 100-year anniversary book
Is that uploaded to the docs section, or hosted anywhere else public? I don’t see it anywhere but I’m also sort of clunky at site navigation.
If it’s not, getting a browser-plugin translated copy in there would be really, really great to have.
This video is awesome!!!
I could swear I had downloaded this from a link that another member had shared in a post. But I cannot find it. When I get home tonight I’ll see if I can get it posted or at least a link for you. It’s pretty large so it won’t fit here as a normal attachment, so I may park it out on my google drive or something
Thank you @Pencilking -
that would be amazing, thanks!
