Pilot Automac E 500 disassembly

Full disassemble and fix.

E and E 500 is almost same, but only one part is different.

When you compare the part located at the bottom left of the first image with that in the second image, you can notice some differences. The “E” model uses a single-piece component for this section, whereas the “E 500” model features an improved design composed of three separate parts.

In the “E” model, graphite buildup inside the clutch can cause the lead to be pushed backward. The upgraded part in the “E 500” prevents this issue. Additionally, it also stops the small ball bearings inside the clutch from moving out of place.

The brass internal components are fitted very tightly and are quite thin, making them prone to cracking. One of the main reasons for frequent malfunctions was due to these cracks causing internal parts to lose their correct positioning.

Although the “E 500” has more components and is more complex to repair, when it functions properly, it is a very high-quality mechanical pencil.

Here is a disassembly and repair post that I uploaded on another site.

There was a black Automac E for sale recently on Ebay, at a price point suspiciously lower than usual (something in the 300$ range, if I remember correctly: almost a miracle, given the usual trend); unfortunately, I was very short on money at the time, as it was almost too strong a temptation. Maybe there will come another chance to get one of those: they are missing the protective cap, and this makes those pencils quite fragile to carry around, but they look as cool and sleek as their “500” relatives — which I still assume I’d prefer, but who knows?

Thank you for sharing these pictures. The Automac E 500 is a rare beast! I feel like its complexity is something I can only admire from afar…

Personally, I found the “E” more comfortable to use than the “E 500.” The “E 500” actually felt a bit heavy in practical use. However, the improved features and durability of the “E 500” are definite advantages, so each model has its pros and cons.
