Pentel Sharp 5 grip ridges / flutes

Can someone remind me as to why some of the Sharp 5’s have super defined ribs/flutes and some don’t?

Asking for a friend. (me )

Theory 1: it started out sharp. Over time, the mold got worn and became smoother. Unlikely…

Theory 2: customer feedback or internal kaizen process. The ridges were too sharp for prolonged use and were deliberately rounded off over time. Best guess is when the stickers became ‘square’.

I absolutely love the mold theory. Now that is cool.

I think the process to make them more shallow presented a less costly manufacturing step and may have also lowered QC fail rates. Since they’re longitudinal rounded grooves (unlike metal slots where fingers would reach the cut point), they don’t add much in the way of grip.
