Pentel PSD5 deconstructed

I would like that as well. For the Pentel Book, it would be nice to have full size shots side-by-side along with the date codes, so we can put a range on it.

Just checked my PSD5. The vertical date code was super crooked! 8201 •
And the knurling felt pretty well-defined? I don’t have another on hand to compare it with :stuck_out_tongue:

What’s the technique for extracting the mechanism? Mine won’t slide out of the body, despite numerous attempts rotating at every degree. I don’t want to over-force it and break any plastic bits.

You have to unscrew this part, but it’s glued into the upper plastic body. The only way I’ve been able to do it is find ones that aren’t holding very fast. Because the body is plastic I can’t do the usual things like heat them up.

I still owe @nimrodd some photos. I recently found my lightbox but I’ve been distracted; sorry about that.

Do you still need this?
I just noticed that I have both variations. A date code 80 06 and an 83 07 and the grips are 100% different.
It isn’t really a crazy difference but the 83 is definitely smoother

Show us some pictures!!

Good going on owning two PSD5’s. They’re really terrific “hi mecha” styled drafting pencils that I feel are a step above the PILOT hi-mecha series. The PSD5 is just not as… “attractive” because it lacks those sexy engraved stripes and shapes.:wink:

I couldn’t agree more!

Also, it’s no longer priced as high as it used to be.
It’s fairly easy to find them sub $100.

Interesting. In the early days eBay was cheaper (just PSD5) but then prices spiked making YAJ and Mercari cheaper.

Maybe fewer people from overseas are competing on eBay USA?

I think you’re right.
Each one I’ve found cheaper was on eBay. It required messaging the seller to bring the price down though.
Sometimes I’m more excited to talk the seller down than actually receive the pencil.
I had two and now one technoclic in a duplicate color because I figured out $65 is the magic number on one of them!

Tangentially related, does anyone here have the black knurled grip prototype of the PSD5?

Rare as hen’s teeth. Probably a one-off.

If I had a beat up PSD5 I might consider painting the grip black!

If looked at closely, it is actually a PWP15. Aside from the model number being printed on the back of the lead hardness ring, the PSD5 has Pentel above the window and 0.5 on the side, where the PWP15 has the 0.5 above the window and Pentel on the side. If you look closely at it, the text above the window is too short to be Pentel.

This pencil has shown up in Japan at some pencil meetups.

Actually, it is more if you look at the side, it is too long to be 0.5 and looks like a “P” next to the window.

I have a spare grip… maybe I should get it anodized. :thinking::face_with_raised_eyebrow::smirking_face::wink:
