Pentel 851 Vintage pencil

Here are a couple of pictures of the Pentel 851D. I had this in my catalog as a 351, but looking at it closer I noew believe it is an 851. Clearly is 0.5mm (maybe one of the earliest 0.5mm pencils from Pentel). The length is about 137.6mm. It has a circular cross section. (Edit: the close up picture is kind of blown out in order to make the marking visible. Since they are not filled or painted the are difficult to read.) Note that mm is cursive. Not all models of this age have the same type face for the model number and lead size.

Very nice to still have the silver cap!!

Yes! Considering how weakly the are attached I am surprised that any are still connected.

I am pretty sure that that is an 851. It has the marks that seem to characterize it (
RESEARCH - Early 1960's Pentels).

I just purchased a lot of pencils that should be arriving Thursday. The reason I purchased it is because it as what appears to be an 851 D.

Looking forward to it’s arrival.

I am not fond of Pentel’s early use of heat stamping the information into the pencils. It is sometimes hard to read, especially since they have models 85x and 35x. It got a little better when they started doing the foil stamping, but even that gets worn off after 60+ years.

The package came in early. It has some tape on it that I will have to get off, but otherwise looks great.

The cap even slides all the way into the body.
