Off Topic: Vintage GT BMX builds

I was chatting with one of our members about vintage BMX bikes and felt inspired to share some of my own builds with you all. Growing up in the '80s and early '90s was an incredible time, and working on these bikes really brings back those good vibes. Each of these bikes is over 35 years old and has been meticulously restored—stripped down, repaired, repainted, and brought back to their former glory. It’s a labor of love and very time-consuming, but so rewarding and a ton of fun.

Mate… that’s a lot of bikes! I thought you only had a couple. Great collection and aome awesome colour combinations in there.

Love the soundtrack on the yellow GT vid - very 80s.

Any tips on pegs? I don’t think I’ll be doing any tricks, just might use them to cart my daughter (7yo) around.

Great post!

Wow, that‘s a huge collection! Are those Freestyle or Race bikes (because of the hubs I thought Freestyle, but the cranksets look huge)?

I have a feeling if the bike in pic three is used (respectfully….depending), one MIGHT feel an abrupt discomfort once a landing is achieved…

Perhaps :face_with_peeking_eye::sweat_smile::smiling_face_with_tear:

Yeah your kid would love to ride on the back like that. We used to call that giving someone a “pump”. “Hey dude, give me a pump to the news stand”.

These are all freestyle bikes. Most of them do, however, have a three piece beefy crankset (GT Power Series).

Just put a deposit on a Skyway TA gold frame. Going to do a custom build. Any advice or tips you’d like to share, go for it.

Had a quick try of the replica Skyway TA 20" pro, red/chrome version. Then saw the gold frame high on the shelf and saw it was 12/300 and decided it was meant to be… 12 was my footy number.

Going to enjoy doing this custom build.

Sweeet dude! Did you get the gold stand with it?

I can’t wait to hear about the parts you choose.

Check out this guy just outside of Austin who built one.

Well, highly depends on the individual :sunglasses:

Very nice build.

I was thinking I’d build out the 60th and wanted to go with selected green parts. Like a racing green… not fluoro or camo. I did a little more reading and discovered the 60th top tube is only 18.5". I think that’s a little too small to ride for my height, so I’m going to keep the 60th boxed for now.

I did pick up the Skyway TA Pro in chrome/red though and the chrome stand is on its way.

Going to look for another frame to do a custom build and will post back here along the way.

Are you saying I should have a basket on the front of this bike?

I was thinking something more like this for you…

This is what would happen if I tried to build a cool bike to ride…

Sorry, Thomas’s choice of music in his video and your 80’s comment on it got my mind a reeling!

Where do I get the alien that goes in the basket that makes my bike fly? I want that mod. Very much.

Right here.

If you make an offer for $3750 he’ll accept.

Yo Knockologist… what’s the name of your wall mounts, please?

I’m considering putting the Skyway Pro up on the wall.

Are you going to build it out or just hang the frame?

Here’s the hanger I use. Nothing fancy.
