This is a relatively new 6-7mm pencil holder from Sennelier, one of Frances oldest and best artist materials suppliers. It is intended to be used with their new range of colour pastel solid pencils, but takes most standard pencils too. I bought it thinking it might be a tin tube and plastic jaws affair, but it is actually a pretty serious heavy duty piece of hardware and I’ve not seen anything so well made for a while from France. Great length for working on an upright board held like a drumstick, too, to give a broader range of gesture and marks, if you like that sort of thing! edit: product link SENNELIER | Pastel-holder — black + metal | 50,000+ Art Supplies | Your Art Superstore
…Annnd it’s gone! Out of stock. Good news is: there is a local version of the online shop you pointed at where I can hope to see the item pop up soon.
Glad to see some new clutch holder for pencils — all current mainstream models seem to be based on a screw-tightening system — I have a very old one (unnamed, unbranded, probably made in Italy just after the and of the War) which works like a charm, but it is in aluminum or some similarly light alloy, and I am curious to see a sturdier and heavier variant.
Yes, I’ve been looking for just this kind of holder for quite some time… I have a Kutsuwa Stad holder but its jaws are plastic and I find the pencils slip into the barrel under any pressure https://www.jetpens.com/Kutsuwa-Stad-One-Push-Pencil-Holder-Black/pd/5781
The Sennelier holder is great!
If the clutch of your Kutsuwa Stad holder is made of plastic there must have been at least two variants; mine has a aluminium clutch and holds the pencil firmly so it doesn’t slip.
Ah, interesting… yes- mine was the silver bodied variant, maybe a cheaper version than that I linked to above
In the end, I surrendered to my own cravings, and jumped on the bandwagon of my wife’s bulk purchases on Amazon to get one; should be here soon, for my amusement.
Will report about the first impressions and my special comparison against my best (super-vintage) unbranded clutch pencil extender; thanks @TheGoodPhite and @Gunther for the invitation, I’m with you on this trip, and so far it seems another funny tangent in the large world of pencils and related accessories. ![]()
