Luddite’s ALTDRAW is definitely one of the anticipated releases for 2026 and had been delayed for a couple of months. The retail price is 6600 JPY, which feels like a steep hike from the previous releases fro TECHDRAW II and EVERDRAW. I got mine here in Singapore from my favorite local speciality shop THINK, and it was marked up even higher. Nevertheless, I went ahead with the purchase in appreciation of the opportunity to see and touch the actual product before buying. I even got to choose the woodgrain!
I chose the lighter tone cherrywood and silver version as I find that it highlights the knurled texture better. Once I got some time on Saturday, I dug out my other wood-body Luddites for a group shot.
When I compared the feel of the knurling, I found it crisp and well machined—on par with the first-gen TECHDRAW, although definitely wider and heavier in the hand. I also appreciated the return of laser etched markings on the wood barrel.
Early bird reviews from Japan had mentioned that the ALTDRAW did not have the familar low center-of-gravity balance of previous Luddite models. A lot of this change in feel is due to the overall weight at 27g, with about 4.5g alone going to the relatively chunky knock button.
The result is that the balance point for the ALTDRAW shifts closer to the center, and together with the increase in weight, it feels like a hefty instrument. Is that a bad thing? Only if you prefer a lower center-of-gravity for the greater stability.
Lastly, here’s the ALTDRAW disassembled. The clutch is all-brass, as expected. However the super slim lead reserve tube was a surprise for me. Was this done to manage the overall weight or cost of materials? This pencil definitely doesn’t look like it can accept more than 3-4 leads at one go. Luddite has included an o-ring on the rear metal flange of the tube to reduce rattling but the knock definitely could do with a bit of tape at the lower neck to work out the residual play.
Overall, I like the ALTDRAW. It feels like a quality release, albeit a bit more expensive than I’d hoped for. My dream now is for Luddite to make and sell optional kits to make a 0.3 or 0.7mm version.
