I live in an apartment that was pre-furnished. This lovely cabinet was practically begging for pencils when we moved in.
Today I had fun folding paper trays and placing all these random pieces together.

What a great way to store and display a collection in such a small footprint. We don’t see many pieces like this in the States, combining an accessory display on top with clothing or storage drawers underneath, but we really should!
Wow, that is an amazing display! I need to get something similar.
You have good taste!
What, you mean the drawers below aren’t for pencils? Tsss ![]()
It is an unusual piece of furniture. It is basically a flat file cabinet made of wood instead of metal. The drawers are all 2-3 inches deep. I bet there would be room for two or three more drawers if it was metal construction, but the wood design is handsome.
Very nice!!
What is the brass cylindrical “thing” in the lower left corner? A lead pointer, perhaps?
Yes, it is a DJ Fugle pointer.
American brass… nice! Looks brand new, even though I assume it is a vintage piece. These old pointers, and especially the hand-held one by Theo Alteneder & Sons, are extra-cool pieces of craftsmanship. Congrats!
It’s great—beautiful—but the paper… I don’t want sound like a buzzkill but the paper degrades the pencil finish because the vegetable fibers act like micro-sandpaper
.
Pointer needs its suction cup…there are non-OEM (duh) new ones available that match the threads…take the pointer to a hardware store and you should be able to figure out the threading if AI doesn’t know..I have some, but do not recall the pitch..
I love it!! This was randomly in the apartment as one of the furnishings?? What a gift from the Universe!
Yes! Maybe the landlord won’t notice when I take it with me some day…
I plan to do that some day, but I like holding the pointer while I use it. Are the suction cups effective on the desktop during the pointing process?
I read the same thing somewhere else recently… but that makes me question why do manufacturers sell them in cardboard boxes then?
And what materials would be safe to store them in? Would acoustic foam work?
Acoustic foam is not suitable for storing or displaying writing instruments. An inert, soft material is best; the specific choice depends on how you intend to arrange them, as there are various options available. If you opt for accordion-style trays—where the entire body of the pen or pencil rests against the material—the material should be soft, such as velvet or microfiber. Ideally, use a material similar to the kind used to wipe pens or pencils during cleaning.
Manufacturers use cardboard boxes to pack their products because they generally hold them securely, preventing friction—yet friction still occurs.
We use this at home; I think it’s polyethylene.
(Apologies for the long off-topic comment).
I see. Originally I had the idea to have custom made foam with a wavy pattern, like on the tray below but with much shallower waves
I’ve seen felt or fabric lining being used a lot in pencil storage, and I’ve been looking at jewellery trays too. They seem to have a soft velour, velvet etc. type of material, but they’re damn expensive
