I want to say Toz, or Bohemia Works. Maybe some sort of Rexpen. I just can’t find any examples.
This game sure has me googling more than normal.
I mentioned that one very early in the topic (LINK)… Alan said no.
Nailed it! And I didn’t even have to resort to any Viking clues.
Hopefully someone here knows more about the Penol Superfine than I do, as it has proved stubbornly resistant to all my usual research tools. It’s a very elegant pencil, styled a bit like an early drafting model but without any grip.
The clutch design is a little disconcerting, yet it seems to work fine. I would probably use it more often, were it not for that fragile-looking threaded plastic attachment under the metal nose cone.
Penol was the Danish firm founded by Christian Olsen in the 1920s, initially as a Parker licensee, and is still around today. The Olsen family collection of fountain pens can be found on the firm’s history page, and another large selection of pens and pencils on this Penol enthusiast site, but alas no Superfine.
I’d be glad to know anything more about Penol’s foray into fineliners, so please do let me know if there’s anything I have overlooked.
Skol!
Very cool! Yes, that’s a really elegant looking pencil. I’d never heard of Penol before. The design is intriguing and artful, especially the symmetry of the steel ends. Where’d you find it, Alan?
As for usage… with really old specimens like this, I’d just do an occasional test of the mechanism and a little test writing, but never anything of long duration. You just never know what can happen. Sometimes these old plastic formulations can degrade over time. As for storage, I’ve not figured out what’s the best method, in terms of air exposure, temperature, and humidity, to keep plastic (and rubber) in the best shape. Definitely high humidity is bad, but also extreme dryness can be bad as well.
I love how elegant it looks… that long tail is unusual!
I know little about Penol. But a few years ago, a nice guy on reddit, @Money_Mechanic, posted a well-loved Penol with no text on it asking what brand it was. I randomly saw a Penol for sale on ebay within a day of his post and thought, ‘Wait a minute, wasn’t someone just asking about this?’ Went back and let him know the brand, and bought the one on ebay, intrigued by the rarity and design. Not sure if I have seen another until this post.
@amjacobs7 – are you going to post the next photo to guess, or would you prefer I submit another?
Yesterday, I was trying to take that mantle, but I didn’t find a suitable gem. Ball to you, @cytherian. Thanks for doing this. It is fun.
OK, no problem. I’ve got plenty to draw from. Here’s the next: LINK
