I was lucky in that when I first got serious about vintage pieces, the ‘SG45’ series was plentiful and often below 3000 yen. As with many collectors starting out, ‘one is enough’ as representative of a series. And I picked the very lovely and vibrant blue.
As time went by, I was stunned by the rapidly rising prices. I had been waffling on maybe getting a SG45 in green and now they commanded prices north of 4000 yen. I remember absolutely not wanting a brown, and yet… it was ‘only’ 2800 yen when I spotted one after months. Ok, I’ll take it.
Then came Jimmy’s Pentel Files, AND his own obsession with the related SV/SG and Excalibur designs. It was very fun seeing the similarities and differences between them… and I soon got hold of a SG15, 75 and more. The boxed 84 LA Olympics set was a blast and facilitated through this very site and community.
After about 2 years, I finally spotted a green SV (ex-SG45). It was definitely more expensive now but… it scratched an itch. Now that I’ve filled up this tray, I think I shall move on to other quests… before I follow in Jimmy’s footsteps down the delightful path of obsession!
Such a beautiful collection. Pentel came up with some very attractive colors for this series.
Do you know what metal material the bodies are made of? Some kind of aluminum alloy or stainless steel? And is there any variation between them? I was wondering if there might be any materials difference in the ¥1500 and ¥1200 models, versus the rest priced at ¥1000.
¥1000 SV5 models (blue / green / brown / dark blue) appear to be anodized aluminum with brass threaded interconnects. Dates on the reserve tube range from 770210 to 780823.
¥1000 SV5 in silver has the same construction and is dated 780715.
¥1200 SV3 in silver has the same construction and is dated 770520. Perhaps the price difference is for the 0.3mm parts.
¥1500 SG15 in matte black with golden accents is probably aluminum too as it feels very light. Dated 781025.
¥1500 SG65 ‘all gold’ - same construction. No date on tube.
SG75 in glossy gold with black stripes. Same aluminum body. No seal, no date.
Excalibur 84 Olympics PX7-21WO. The metal halves may be glued together, so I haven’t managed to unscrew them. But, the weight is very similar to the rest.
