Hey all. Wanted to show off my Modded Rotring newton. Ive always liked the pencil but not a fan of the conical tip/nib. I finally put it under the knife and modded mine to have the classic drafting pencil tip/nib. It looks awesome now!
Pricey piece to mod . Glad it worked out for you
Haha yes, but luckily the mod was very simple to do, and only required very little modification.
Care to share how /what you did to mod it??
Actually the best pencil Rotring ever made, imo. I much regret selling the one I had, with a nice grey soft finish.
At that time I probably didn’t really needed to, which irks me even more.
Love this; I also hate the conical writing tip. There are quite a few elevated pieces in pencildom that are more or less ruined for me, at least from an “I actually want to use this” perspective, because they have that stupid, stubby conical tip.
Its pretty simple actually. You take the nib from the $9 blick art materials double knock, and thread it on. Then take the Newton tip and drill it to about 0.310", and then youre good to go!
I like the ingenuity!
Hmm. I was unaware of this color. It is a medium matte gray? Not just silver one in soft light?
Why do you despise the conical top so much?
The cone and smooth grip always felt like the 600 was designed defanged by a focus group to offer a gentler solution to executive types who had never seen a drafting table in their lives.
Sort of a light coloured gun metal with a tiny bit of sparkle to it. It was a thick coating.
It’s a combination of 3 things:
- Visibility of the tip while writing
- Stability of a lead sleeve vs. the cone
- Proximity of my fingertips to the paper while writing (cone is closer)
Using a pencil with a conical tip makes me realize how much value I place on the calibration of the whole writing experience. Lead sleeves that run from 2–4mm are ideal, but I can also get along with water droplet and “squeeze”-style tips, such as those found on many Pilot executives.
Something about the conical tip (and Pilot’s Clutch Point tips, which I consider adjacent) just hit me the wrong way.
I believe its the silver one. Ill have to see if i can find the box (i usually keep them) and see if it specifies.
The conical tip is terrible. I agree with Pearsonified on all the points, plus the normal pencil pipe style tip allow more visibility and control. You dont necesarily consider the attention youre paying to them until you really start testing different ones and finding what best suits your writing or drafting style.
For me, i like double knocks because of the little bit of suspension it adds to not only the pencil lead, but the pencil barrel as well, so you get different variations with different pressures. By far my favorite pencil is the Pilot H-2005, it checks all of the boxes i typically look for, but now i have to put this New-Newton in my top 10.
