You finally got one, Patrick?

No, not yet :sunglasses:

The price has gone up, as announced previously. But this is still easier to justify than any of Postalco’s pens.

Coincidentally, while assembling furniture today, I sighed in despair “i dread the day mechanical pencils come with an Alan wrench….”

Though this is a pen, my fears feel realized :person_gesturing_no::person_facepalming:……. :person_with_white_cane:t3:‍:arrow_right:……

I think this ‘nuts’ method to open the MechaSea is part of the charm. It was designed by a motorcycle mechanic after all haha!

Has anyone bought one of these? I’m sitting high on the fence.

Not yet; I have been trying to up the ante with my pens recently, but the square-section barrel of this object makes it rank just below the “I definitely want/need it” level for me. After I get a few more items on my wanted list, maybe, but if a nicer pencil pops up, that’s where the money will go.

Yeah, that’s what has me up the ladder to the highest part of said fence. I definitely don’t need another pen. Thanks for your take on it. Helps a lot.

Both @cytherian and me have purchased the MechaSea. Do check out our respective reviews - I posted mine on Reddit some time ago before I gave up on r/pens. I recommend the MechaSea to anyone who can justify the price for a well crafted passion project.

Thanks Kelvin! Like I said, on the fence. Precariously, but on it.

It all comes down to collection intent. If you plan to put this to use on a fairly regular basis… well, I really wouldn’t encourage a purchase. It’s much more about the unique nature of the design and the fact that it’s a single pen design created by someone who runs a custom motorcycle parts company. You can certainly use this pen for short periods without issue. But there are limitations on where you can comfortably grip it. It has a squared off body (versus cylindrical) and the deployment / retraction is done by knob rotation.

Lastly, it’s really obscure and not well known. If you bought it and wanted to resell, you’d likely find yourself losing a little (or more) money. However, because it is also a wonderfully unique writing instrument with a stellar storage/presentation case (crafted out of solid aluminum), it can make a great gift for someone who is into innovative or unusual design.

As always, thank you for your incredible insight.

But why would I want to gift this to someone? I’m the pen/pencil person.

There are very, very few who would appreciate the time and energy that went into making this piece.

You’re welcome.

I don’t know anything about the people in your life… and just threw that out there in case you might know someone else who is into beautifully designed things. I used to know a guy whose profession is architecture and he also loved vintage motorcycles–he’d probably love the MechaSEA pen.
