Disclosure up front: I work on OneMall, a Japan proxy/forwarding service. I posted here once before about the 文房具屋さん大賞 result. I am not going to pitch anything — the numbers below are the point, and they apply whichever proxy you use.
Reading the Buyee shipping advice thread, the recurring complaint is that shipping costs more than the pencil. I pulled live quotes this morning (11 September 2026) for parcels the size and weight we actually deal with, and the result is more lopsided than I expected.
One pencil ships for the same price as six
Every carrier prices per parcel with a minimum charge, and a single pencil sits at the bottom of the opening weight band. Quotes taken 11 Sep 2026, one parcel, four realistic pencil loads:

Not one carrier, to any of those five countries, charges a cent more for six pencils than for one. The first increase anywhere shows up at 600 g, and even then it is $2–3.
Two things that surprised me and are worth knowing regardless of who you ship with:
- There is no Japan Post option to the US at all right now — the choice is ECMS or DHL. UK/EU/CA/AU still get Seamail and EMS.
- Sea mail is barely cheaper than EMS and costs you 30–90 days. To Germany it is $17.75 vs $22.37. For a ¥2,000 pencil, paying $4.62 to get it in a week instead of three months is usually the right call.
What that looks like on a real basket
Six pencils that were genuinely in stock when I checked this morning, with the price the proxy would actually charge:

Shipped one at a time to the US: 6 × $17.44 = $104.64.
Shipped as one ~350 g parcel: $17.44.
Buying them separately costs more in postage than the pencils are worth. That is the whole argument for sitting on things in a warehouse until you have a handful. Most services (mine included) hold items ~90 days free, so there is no rush; on ours consolidation is free for the first 6 orders and ¥100 per order after that.
The usual volumetric-weight trap does not bite here, for once — pencils are dense and flat. It is figures and boxed kits where carriers bill you on box size instead of actual weight.
The trap in the used listings
One thing worth flagging if you search the Japanese used markets directly, because it caught me while pulling the numbers above: a lot of the cheapest hits are not pencils.
Searching オレンズネロ on the used side, the four cheapest results today were ¥450 「オレンズネロ空箱」, ¥600 「…空箱」, ¥1,350 「オレンズネロ の箱」 — 空箱 means empty box, sold to people completing a collection. Same for クルトガダイブ, where the cheapest hit was ¥4,500 marked ジャンク (junk/for parts). If you are filtering by price ascending and not reading the Japanese, you will “win” an empty box.
Worth having 空箱 (empty box), 箱無し (no box), ジャンク (junk), and 本体のみ (body only) in your head before you bid.
