Just checked, and of course you need to mangle at least one of the parts.
The grip will fit the cone and front and lock into place just by that.
Did you file down the threading of the grip or just the plastic body?
Either way, the result is awesome!

I sanded the pencil body, but the grip section ended up misaligned with the body, making the whole thing crooked—naturally, since the grip section doesn’t sit against a flat surface. Even so, it writes well, feels good, I like it.

It turned out great—how does it feel in the hand? The grip on mine ended up misaligned with the body, which makes sense since the inside of the grip is wider than the pencil. I think using a lathe might yield better results (wth fingernail 
).
Mine turned out pretty great and with nothing looking or feeling ”wrong” at either end of the grip.
And yes, the lathe helps… A LOT.
