K.I.T.T. vs Tikky

OK, Magnum’s Ferrari 308 was cool and all, but can any TV-show car beat 1982’s K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider? It’s like a sneak peek into our current day, with an A.I. powered personality and full auto self driving… I never missed an episode if I could help it!

Multiple versions of K.I.T.T. were built, based on the '82 Pontiac Firebird TransAm, for stunts, close-ups, etc and today, a few still live on, like the one restored by Jon Huth and featured on Jay Leno’s Garage. And visually, the standout has to be the flashing red LEDs on the front. I found a nifty miniature diecast by Tomica Premium that came out in 2023, and the lights were faithfully reproduced in static format, for which I am thankful, as I wouldn’t have to deal with any finicky batteries or electronics.

In terms of a matching pen design, the brand that immediately came to mind was rOtring. The oft seen ‘red ring’ on a black body seemed like an obvious visual match. But not 500 or 600! I went for the Tikky Double Push. Why? The spelling of ‘Tikky’ was almost a palindrome for K.I.T.T., and of course, the double-knock mechanism would be an analog to the pop-up headlights. I can totally see David Hasselhoff having a Tikky as part of his EDC wardrobe

The black nose cone instead of silver surprises me. Is that the plastic body model?

Yup, this one is all plastic on the outside!

I loved this show as a kid, however as with a lot of things you liked as a kid, if you try to watch any of it to “relive” those memories - just DON’T because all you will do is ruin them as you sit there and try to process how you could’ve liked it at all.

Oh man… Knight Rider, Air Wolf, Blue Thunder, Street Hawk, Automan… Hardcastle and McCormick! Miami Vice was banned on Singapore’s OTA broadcast for drugs and violence and didn’t become available until cable came around in the (very) late 90s.
