Introducing - my Elkarios Varidraft

Dear fellow Knockologists,

It is with great pleasure that I would like to finally introduce my personal project with Lindsay from IJ Instruments: the Elkarios Varidraft.

I first came up with this design during Summer of 2025, after I began brainstorming what the ideal pencil body shape would be for my style of grip. After some ergonomics studies, as well as trying out an extensive number of extant models of mechanical pencils, I finalized the first draft on paper in June:

At this point it was still just an idea that I had, but I had known IJ Instruments to produce custom and finely machined mechanical pencil bodies for Pentel mechanisms, around which I had designed my own model. An e-mail turned into a lengthy chain as we finalized the design for production - 5 pieces, three 0.5mm models in black and two 0.3mm models in silver, machined from aluminium and anodized (a process which Lindsay is incorporating for the first time for this project!).

I had considered other materials, including steel, brass, and titanium, but decided on Aluminium mostly due to the finished weight and finish. During early stages, steel and brass were immediately disqualified due to their projected weights - 43 and 46 grams respectively! - and though titanium was also good, the machining complexity of the design unfortunately precluded it.

These are the renders from the finalized design, which then went into production… for 8 months!

It ended up taking much longer than expected, partially due to the anodization process, but today I finally received images of the completed product, which is to be shipped to me this following week.

Without further ado, the Varidraft!

The project is not fully finished yet, as I intend to experiment with various other Pentel nose cones from compatible models once I receive these pieces in hand. When I do, I will be sure to post more photos here for your enjoyment. Thank you for reading, and welcome to all comments!

Love the design of these!

Now I think I see where your post last month about the “ideal mechanical pencil” was coming from! :eyes:

Any plans for removable clip, maybe like the Uchida Drawing Sharp has?

Wow - those are absolutely stunning! :star_struck:

Are there any plans to offer these either directly or via IJ Instruments?

Cheers,

Tim

@eibl No plans to add a clip because I personally don’t like them on a pencil! Though it would be as simple as just sliding one on that fits..

@MustangFanatic No plans for sale (for now), though I may have something else cooking…

Amazing pieces stemming from a super-cool design. The knurling patterns are delightful. Also, I am happy to know artisans still do exist, who are able to take a project on paper, and make an actual workable piece out of that.

This is a special moment, and the true next step in any collector’s life: an entirely new pencil, from scratch.

One day, maybe, I’ll find the inspiration to look for these artisans and try to make my own dream pencil…

Congratulations!

Delightful. Wonderful design and grip. And fantastic execution as always by @lindsay.wilson.88.

Fantastic design, and incredible project.

Quite unlike anything I’ve ever seen, in the best way (I am still an amateur to this hobby though).

Slightly reminiscent of the Parafernalia Diamante too, if anyone else sees it?

I also feel like this is similar to an MP that I could enjoy very much as well. Out of curiosity, why no plans to sell?

What are those two large cylinders in the last picture for?

Kerry cone on the clear ones will look sweet.

Are the mechanisms out of the box or did they get the full metal treatment too?

And if so, can an out of the box P200 or PG5 still fit?

@speedfreek The mechanisms are based on p200 but the lead reservoir tube has been replaced with metal (brass I believe)

Exciting update: I’ve received the pencils in person.

Here is the gold trim one in a lineup with some commonly recognized pencils so that you can have an idea of its relative dimensions:

It fits my hand perfectly (as it was designed to be), and is the perfect weight (it’s probably lighter than you think from how solidly metal it looks!) All in all I am incredibly happy with how this project turned out.

Bonus: the actual item next to the initial 1:1 scale drawing:

Congratulations on realizing your dream pencil! Stunning!!

This is the complete antithesis to the glut of uninspired “minimalist” designs that I see on kickstarter all the time. Much needed!

This is just wonderful ! ! !
I am interested why did you decide for the knurling to be like this. I myself would put the “6 mm hybrid” part near the cone (unoriginal but seems more practical)

This is so cool - i love the tapered profile, dang! Congratulations

Due to the way I grip my pencils, my thumb rests on the vertical knurls, my index finger on the lower horizontal knurls, and my middle finger on either the hybrid or horizontals. When in detail writing mode, my grip moves a bit lower, where my thumb goes onto the hybrids and my other two fingers on the horizontals.

This is great for me because I use my thumb to rotate my pencil to get the desired line width by using specific angles and parts of the lead that have become sharper or duller with use, while drawing. I prefer having this control manually rather than through an automatic rotation mechanism like kuru toga.

This is also the reason I am clip-averse, as it tends to dig into the web of your thumb as you rotate the pencil.

It is very nice too see someone thinking things through. Respect!
