I have an old Rotring Tikky 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with a sliding sleeve. I’ve talked about it with @/Pdunc67 over on YouTube, and he talked with Dux who confirmed that it’s a “Tikky S Metallic early version from 1980 to 1983. R502155”. Obviously it’s full metal inside and out. There are no text on the pencil apart from the stamped/embossed Rotring logo on the pocket clip. There may have been text printed on it some time ago, I don’t remember. It’s a regular knock mechanism, not automatic. The sleeve is extended by the friction of the lead
I’m looking for price estimates out of curiosity. I enjoy using the pencil (though the grip is too slippery imho) so it’s unlikely I’d sell it, but I’m still curious to learn what it may be worth today
Unfortunately it’s not in pristine condition; I wish it still was. Known issues that I’m sure affect its value:
- It has quite a few scratches on the body and a few chips of “paint”. The pencil is clean so everything you see is wear and tear, not dirt
- Internally it seems to work fine, however sometimes a brand new lead struggles to get into the clutch for some reason. I mean in cases when there’s no lead held by the clutch at all. But other times the lead falls into the clutch easily after a few knocks, I’m not sure what the deal is with that
- The sliding sleeve has a little too much resistance so it rarely moves along the advancing lead. I tend to leave it exposed and carefully retract the lead into the sleeve only, and not retract the sleeve
- Now this point is strange, I don’t know if this is the pencil’s fault or not: some leads fall out if the clutch is open, some other leads are quite snug in the sleeve. So much so they move the sliding sleeve whenever I knock the pencil or retract the lead. Some leads even took the lead retainer ring out of the tip instead of sliding back through it. I managed to put the ring back and it stays in place. Now here’s the odd part: these “different” leads are all HB 0.5, and they feel the exact same way in every other pencil I’ve tried. They feel normal, nothing loose or too snug. But different piece of lead act like this in this particular Tikky pencil for reasons I can’t figure out. Using a brand new Rotring HB 0.5 lead is too tight and takes the retainer ring out when I retract the lead lol. I can’t find any consistency between what lead is loose inside the ring and what is too snug. The clutch seems to work perfectly however and it holds any lead properly if it’s closed
- The eraser is completely used up and looks a little dirty on both sides
