I am new here so apologies if I am not doing this right. Recently I have acquired a Dietzgen Elastichuck 3174-D (double-ended) lead holder that needs its rubber gaskets replaced. I can’t for the life of me figure out what people are using to replace these (can’t find info anywhere). I have heard of cutting rubber tubing to create new washers but I am unsure of what diameter or kind. If anyone has experience with this please let me know - I’d love to get this leadholder working again.
Additionally, I’d love to know more info about this model in specific. I checked an archived version of leadholder.com and so far all I have found is a loose production date (1945-1960) and that it was produced in the USA which I already knew. Does anyone know where in the US this was made? or any other info about it? I am dying to know.
Hi. Welcome! I have the same problem, will be eyeing this post
Once saw someone selling an Elastichuck + 3 or 4 rubbers gaskets on eBay, but when I finally decided to get that item (I didn’t want the pencil, seller wouldn’t sell separately) it was too late
Thank you! I sent him a message on Reddit. If I learn anything I will be sure to share it here for other people in the future who may have the same problem. I’m surprised how little information is out there on the these leadholders! :0
Upon further inspection, I realized the rubber gaskets were still in the nose pieces! The bad part is they are rock hard and unusable (they camouflaged so well I couldn’t see them upon first inspection). The good news is there is hope! I managed to get them out fully intact and measured with calipers. The dimensions are as follows:
There is plenty of tubing on Amazon with those inner and outer diameter measurements; I will be buying some and seeing if it works as a replacement when cut into 3mm sections. If this does work, I will make a guide for those here who would like to do the same. Updates coming soon.
hmmm this could be the case - considering they put their name on products from other manufacturers it makes me wonder what they actually produced at this location haha. Thank you for the info!
Unreal. Thank you for preparing this instructional graphic. I will do the same to mine.
Edit: This dark gray fitting is lose on one or two of my Elastichucks. It wiggles in a way that leads me to believe it is not a threaded connection. Has anyone ever separated the barrel from this fitting?
