Good beginner non fountain pen Christmas ideas?

Hey,
I am putting together a Christmas list right now, and I would like to get into pens (I just got into mechanical pencils). But the one catch is that I am not allowed to get a fountain pen because of ink explosion risks. Are there any ideas for a good pen around 15-30 ish dollars? Thanks in advance.

Hey @TLWeath, welcome to the forum!

There’s a ton of different options, so to narrow it down a bit:

I am thinking abouta rollerball, I should have said that in advance. I am flexible, though

welcome to the forum - here are a few

Pentel Libretto Pentel Libretto Roller Gel Pen and Pencil Set with Gift Box, Pen 0.7mm and Pencil 0.5mm

Zebra Sharbo X multipens are cool - but they are ballpoints

Parker always makes nice rollerballs

And for ballpoint - the rOtring 600 and 800 pens are nice, but ballpoints
and the 3 in 1s are cool

hope that helps - Merry Christmas

In JP you can get engravings on your pen as well, I don’t know and doubt if that service still exists in the US and so on

The Pentel Tradio pens come in several different types, including a “fountain” pen with a plastic tip and self contained ink. It isn’t refillable in the sense that ink can be injected into the cartridge or just a cartridge replaced. The whole tip/cartridge assembly is replaced. (Some fountain pen aficionados would most likely claim it isn’t a true fountain pen.)

Here is the more traditional fountain pen version:

Consider Ohto GS02 rollerball? (Edit: I meant CR02) There’s a matte dark red and a gloss wine colorway for possibly more christmas vibes

A Uni jetstream prime could be a good option.

I really like wood pens and mechanical pencils so my suggestion has to be the Pilot Legno or the Pilot S20 pen (I prefer the S20)

But my real favourite pen is the extremely simple and maybe even a bit ugly Pilot Precise V5 RT (can be found under the name Hi-Tecpoint too)

Though not “glamorous”
I recommend any Zebra gel pen.
There’s a new G750 that I’m going to make a post on that is beautiful and very comfortable.
There’s also the G402 that is also very comfortable and reliable.

I say Zebra

Sure…you can catch a 2nd hand TWSBI on ebay for that amount and some of the Chinese pens are not bad either.

I’m surprised that Mitsubishi/uni was only mentioned once.

I’m a very happy user of uni’s ballpoint and gel pens, and my favourite is the uni one F barrel which can be used with the Signo 207, Signo 307, one, Zento, and Jetstrean refills. I have a few others, including some Zebra Sarasa pens, but I always come back to uni.

ZEBRA G750

This pen is one of my favorite of late.
It writes very smooth and the grip is very comfortable.
Surprisingly, I’ve dropped the white one and it cleaned up easily with zero signs of it ever happening.
It’s all metal and ZEBRA took the care to make sure you’re set with refills and color choices for a long time to come.
