Through two rounds of trades, I have acquired some very nice custom pieces from two Korean custom brands.
two are Hobby Tank and three are Hanpen.
I have to say I like the Hanpen the most.
Also, even better, I was able to specify three of them to be 0.9mm!
Yes but different than I thought it would be.
It’s got sort of a gradient type of etch to it with less being closer to the grip, and the small rectangles seem to be a sort of annealed titanium.
Even though I find all of them vaguely puzzling, they feel so in a very satisfying and graceful way. I am perplexed by the mixture of features but amazed by the final outcome.
In a world of mass production, these pieces surely stand out for their uniqueness and, at the same time, reference to revered classics.
The detail where the tip protector connects is a little fussier on the Hanpen, but I suppose it is helping to overcome the scratching problem on the Hobby Tanks, right?
It’s called synthetic abalone or something like that. Seems to be a sort of resin.
It’s the same with the green.
The black is ebonite.
The hanpen is actually less fussy in the sense that they actually considered working into the design the ability to post the cap onto the back side.
The hobby tank does not post on either of them and is definitely a disappointment in that respect.
The hobby tank does offer a second cap choice though that has a clip attached. One with a clip and one without.
As far as a scratching problem, the hobby tank definitely seems more abrasive. Even though the Hanpen has a pressure to it that helps retain its connection, the hobby does not have a comforting feel.
There are some Xeno and Helix pencils that I’d love to have. Don’t get me started on Dong A. Everyone could use a solid Korean expansion in their collection!
