I started from the current Contura, then found out about the vintage Contura XF and Contura XL. Then noticed that they all look identical to the vintage Apollo (DS?). And it seems that there is also an Apollo L and even an Apollo XL? And they probably inspired the design of the Alphamatic?
What’s going on here? I am lost. Which came first? What are the differences between all these models? Why the different names if they look identical? Am I missing any more variants?
The difference is that Apollo has fully retractable/ sliding lead sleeve, while on the Contura it is fixed. There are versions with shiny chromed metal grip for both. They first appeared in 1983-84, search the forum for catalog posts. All of these have plastic clutch jaws and a very mushy click feel.
Alpha matic is older and of far better quality than these.
Not sure how it differs from the TKfine L @DarkwingDuck showed. Could it be just a branding difference due to region/production time period? (I know nothing about FC’s history)
